Candid Glimpse On Feast Of Trinity
On June 16, marking the Feast of the Holy Trinity, Jonathan Roumie—best known for his portrayal of Jesus Christ in the hit series The Chosen—shared three makeup-free photos on his Instagram. Standing beside the wooden cross at the center of his current schedule, Roumie wrote, “Here I am. On this Feast of the Holy Trinity. These photos will likely be the only glimpse of me out of costume / makeup that I’ll be able to share for quite a long time.”
He added that a “breakneck schedule and continued intensity of the work ahead” mean he probably won’t post personal shots again until filming slows. While nondisclosure agreements prevent plot reveals, Roumie admitted he’s been “rendered utterly speechless through this experience in so many ways.”
About Jonathan Roumie
According to his official biography, Roumie was born in New York City in 1974 and began acting in the late 1990s. Over two decades he’s appeared in guest roles on series such as Touched by an Angel and NCIS, and lent his voice to animated projects. His casting as Jesus in The Chosen in 2017 transformed him into a household name, earning acclaim for both his performance and his commitment to the faith-based series’ crowd-funded model.
The Weight Of The Role
Roumie is currently filming the Crucifixion sequence for The Chosen’s fifth season, a storyline he described in a prior Instagram update as “one of the most sacred, painful, and defining moments in all of human history.” In that June post, he wrote, “It’s heavy. It’s humbling. And it’s holy,” and invited followers to join a Sacred Heart Prayer Challenge on the Hallow app. He emphasized that both cast and crew are engaged in “mental, physical, and spiritual warfare,” requesting prayers to sustain them through grueling shoot days.
Cast Camaraderie And Prayers
Behind the scenes, Roumie noted that he and his colleagues lean on one another during emotionally intense sequences. “I have witnessed many members of my cast and crew emotionally leveled much in the same way I have been,” he said. “The grace is that we have been lifting each other up throughout, and I couldn’t feel more blessed.” He concluded with a verse: “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth.”
Fans responded with heartfelt comments and virtual prayers, flooding the post with gratitude for Roumie’s openness. He closed his message by reminding everyone that “continued prayers are vital to our success and wellbeing” and signed off with, “Praying for you all. With love and blessings, -JR.”
Behind The Scenes Of The Chosen
The Chosen, created by Dallas Jenkins, is the first multi-season television drama about the life of Christ. Season 5—now streaming on Prime Video—continues to develop the stories of the disciples alongside Roumie’s portrayal of Jesus. Production protocols for the Crucifixion scenes include expert stunt coordination, period-accurate set design, and on-set spiritual support from chaplains.
Roumie’s willingness to share candid moments underscores his dedication to authenticity and to the series’ global audience. As filming presses on into summer, these makeup-free snapshots offer viewers a rare look at the man behind the role—and a call to join him in reflection and prayer.
