Actor Matthew Davis, known for his roles in TV shows like “Grosse Pointe Garden Society,” has shared a philosophical new artistic creation on Instagram that explores themes of mortality, faith, and living fully.
The post features a still-life image containing a skull motif that Davis explains evolved from playing with his initials as a potential logo design. The image appears to be rendered in a dark, moody aesthetic that Davis describes as appropriate for the rainy weather he was experiencing.
In his caption, Davis begins with a biblical quote from 2 Corinthians 5:17: “The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” He explains that while he initially considered using his initials with a skull and bones design for a logo, he ultimately preferred creating a still-life which functions as a “#momentomori” – a traditional artistic reminder of mortality.
The Art Of Contemplating Mortality
The actor elaborated on his artistic concept: “A reflection on the impermanence of life. Not a warning so much, but a reminder. To live fully. Without fear.” He added that pairing the visual with the song “Millionaire” creates “a playful irony, commenting on the fleeting nature of materialism.” Davis distills his philosophical message into a simple dichotomy: “We have fear or we have faith.”
The post concludes on a personal note with Davis mentioning the rainy weather matching the mood of his artwork, and asking followers to “Wish me luck on my way home xo” – suggesting he was traveling when he shared the post.
Exploring AI As An Artistic Medium
This philosophical reflection comes amid Davis’s recent exploration of AI-generated imagery, like this one. Just days earlier, he posted an AI creation called “Static,” explaining it was his sixth iteration of the concept.
“I find you need to keep pushing the images, adding layers of specificity to the prompts before you begin to break out of the first wave of generic images,” Davis wrote about his AI experimentation process. “For me, AI is a remarkable tool to brainstorm and generate inspiration.”
Another recent AI project he titled “RE:NASCENT” attempted to “blend classical composition with digital decay” – describing it as “a collage of contradictions: analog and algorithmic, nostalgic and prophetic, broken and simultaneously sacred.”
Career Resurgence With NBC’s Garden Society
Davis currently stars in NBC’s murder mystery dark comedy “Grosse Pointe Garden Society.” In promotional posts for the show, he’s used the tagline “Nothing stays buried for long in Grosse Pointe” and shared that the series recently moved to a Friday night time slot at 8/7c on NBC, with episodes streaming on Peacock the following day.
The actor plays a character named Warner on the series, recently posting a clip with the caption: “Same Warner, different blonde,” suggesting his character has undergone some changes in the show’s storyline.
Personal Life And Fatherhood
Beyond his artistic and acting endeavors, Davis occasionally shares glimpses of his personal life on social media. A touching recent post showed flowers his daughter Ripley had arranged for him. “Ripley picked these flowers, asked me to fill a glass with water, plucked the flowers off the stem and dropped them in. She handed the glass back to me and said, this is for you dad… I think I’ll keep her,” he wrote.
Davis also recently shared a childhood photo of himself in Paris from 1980, when he was just two years old.
As Davis continues balancing his acting career with artistic exploration and family life, this latest philosophical post reveals his contemplative side and willingness to engage with deeper themes of existence through his creative work.
