Ghettotech’s Detroit Origins
When you think of Detroit nightlife in the late ’80s through the early 2000s, ghettotech’s hyperspeed rhythms and Miami-bass-inspired call-and-response ruled every dancefloor from Maxi’s to backyard barbecues. Originating as a high-energy fusion of hip-hop, house and techno, the sound declined in mainstream clubs by the mid-2000s—until Detroit trio HiTech stepped in.
Honeypaqq: Maximalist Mixtape
Milf Milo Chops, King Milo and 47Chops have just dropped HONEYPAQQ Vol. 1, a mixtape they stress is “informed by our shows around the world,” not a full studio album. The project leans into a philosophy of maximalism first sounded on their Détwat debut, layering sticky techno hooks over breakneck percussion. One standout moment finds the beat melting into a Terminator-style reveal of raw machine funk—if Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cyborg just wanted to drink Henny and cheer at the DJ booth instead of…well, you know.
Lyrically, the mixtape refuses to hold back. “I AIN’T GON’ FRONT, THAT ASS LOOK LIKE A BIG BISCUIT,” they shout over a booming bassline—proof that party vibes and boundary-pushing lyrics still go hand in hand in the genre.
Carrying The Baton Worldwide
Musical contributor Kahn Santori Davison notes that Generation Xers who lived those sweaty nights at Maxi’s and River Rock may not have expected a revival, but HiTech “has taken the baton, representing past, present and future slices of Detroit music.” That global outlook shows on HONEYPAQQ, which draws on crowd reactions from Movement Festival’s Memorial Day stage and recent European club dates.
In a DJ Mag interview, the trio discussed their riotous Coachella set, their “DGAF” party ethos and the decision to deliver a mixtape first—an approach that lets them test new sounds live before committing to an album. Onstage they slash through machine-funk drops, call fans on the mic and leave rooms rattling.
What’s Next?
While HONEYPAQQ Vol. 1 cements HiTech’s role as modern-day ghettotech torchbearers, they promise a proper album soon. For now, fans can catch them on festival bills worldwide and dive into the mixtape’s relentless energy—proof that when Detroit hands you the bass, you crank it up as loud as possible.
With HONEYPAQQ leading the charge, ghettotech’s next chapter is officially written.
