A Song Rooted In Transformation
“God Is Change” first arrived on streaming platforms earlier this month, and Elbert has been reflecting on the song’s deeper meaning in a series of Instagram posts. In one update marking its first week, she thanked listeners and shared a custom playlist, writing, “One week of ‘God is Change’ 🌹 thanks to everyone who’s been listening and sharing love. I made a lil playlist of tunes I love that I’ve been spinning alongside it.” (See Instagram post: https://www.instagram.com/p/DJouwHducqI/.)
Elbert has described the track as born from “a moment of grief and transformation,” inspired by visionary author Octavia Butler and her former Altadena home. In an earlier post, she explained, “Walking through the forest there, the lyrics came—‘feed my form into the flames / knowing I’ll be born again’—before I had any idea how real they would become. Soon, wildfires tore through that same forest…and reduced so much to dust. But the Earth keeps turning.” (See Instagram post: https://www.instagram.com/p/DJWxmu5J784/.)
Collaborators And Credits
Elbert tapped director-cinematographer Cory Gehr and creative studio Visual Utopia Group to bring the video’s concept to life. Their work blends reflective surfaces, natural motifs, and bold color shifts to capture the song’s cycle-of-life message. On the technical side, the original recording enlisted:
• Dan Knobler on production, mixing, guitars and omnichord
• Antoine Katz on bass
• Terence F. Clark on drums and percussion
• Swattykins on piano and organ
• Wlly Daniels on Juno synth
• Moore Amasa and Kiah Victoria on additional vocals
• MrMaster3000 on mastering
Visual art for the single was created by Inesita Papafrita, with promotional photos by ShervinFoto at Archival.LA. The video’s mirrored frames and organic light transitions echo the song’s call to embrace both destruction and rebirth.
Fans eager for more can watch the full video tomorrow on Emily Elbert’s official YouTube channel and website. With its early release on Atwood Magazine, the “God Is Change” clip promises to start conversations about art, nature, and personal metamorphosis.
Elbert continues to tour with fellow artists—she recently joined Amos Lee on a southern U.S. run—and is planning her next set of live dates. As she balances studio work and stage appearances, her music remains rooted in community, environment, and the enduring power of change.
