Tune-yards announced today that frontwoman Merril Garbus will join fans for an Ask Me Anything session on Instagram Live this Friday, May 23 at 3pm ET (12pm PT). The official post urges followers to tap “Remind me” on the announcement to receive a notification when the AMA begins, then check the link in the bio or story for full details.

How To Join The Session

To take part, head over to the band’s Instagram profile at the appointed time. The AMA will stream directly in the story feed—no third-party app required. Fans are encouraged to drop questions in the comments or use the questions sticker once the live video goes up. Whether you’re curious about the recording process, upcoming tour plans or Garbus’s creative inspirations, this is your chance to ask.

Artist Background And New Album

Tune-yards (stylized tUnE-yArDs) is the experimental pop project of composer–multi-instrumentalist Merril Garbus and bassist Nate Brenner. Since their 2009 debut album BiRd-BrAiNs, tune-yards have earned acclaim for their looping techniques, percussive arrangements and genre-bending soundscapes. Their fourth album, I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life (2018), landed a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

The band’s latest release, Better Dreaming, arrived on May 16 via the independent label 4AD. Produced by Garbus and Brenner, the record channels urgency and optimism, blending sharp lyricism with buoyant rhythms. In a recent Instagram post, Garbus described the album as “fuel to spur us all into action; courage to change ourselves; and solidarity with all the work already being done in the name of justice, peace, and better dreaming about what our world could be.”

Celebrating Better Dreaming At Amoeba Sf

On May 17, tune-yards held a release party at Amoeba Music in San Francisco. The event featured a brief live set, an album signing and exclusive merchandise—sleep masks, posters and stickers—for fans who purchased Better Dreaming on-site. Hundreds turned out to hear tracks like “How Big Is the Rainbow” and grab limited blue-wave vinyl editions.

What To Expect In The Ama

Garbus is known for her candid, down-to-earth style. Expect insights on songwriting techniques—she often layers ukulele loops with hand percussion and vocal effects in real time—plus stories from the road. Earlier this month, the duo kicked off their North American tour in Philadelphia, where they praised local venues and fans in an Instagram tribute that thanked venues like Johnny Brenda’s and WXPN.

Fans may also learn about upcoming support acts. In recent posts, tune-yards teased special guests Kassa Overall, MadMcferrin and Ring Dingo on select dates. Ticket and pre-sale information is available at tune-yards.com, along with a full list of summer tour stops.

Looking Ahead Beyond Friday

Following the AMA, Garbus and Brenner will return to the studio for various collaborations. The band also shared a Letterboxd list of films that have inspired their creative dreams—titles range from Agnes Varda’s Vagabond to Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You—suggesting a possible multimedia expansion of their work.

Whether you’re a longtime follower or newly drawn in by Better Dreaming, Friday’s AMA offers a front-row seat to the minds behind tune-yards. Don’t forget to hit “Remind me” on the Instagram announcement post so you’re first in line when the Live starts.

Get your questions ready, set your alarms for 3pm ET/12pm PT, and prepare to dive deep into the world of tune-yards.
