A Friendship Struck Online

Jason Narducy, best known as the longtime bassist for Bob Mould and a member of Superchunk, opened his heart this week with a moving tribute to George Wendt, a devoted indie rock fan whose loss he has just learned. The two first connected in 2015 when Wendt sent a Facebook friend request that initially appeared to be a fake celebrity account.

“I thought it was yet another fake celebrity account but when I looked at his page, it was full of family photos,” Narducy recalled. He accepted, sent a hello message and discovered that Wendt had come to SPACE in Evanston to see Bob Mould and him perform. Though they missed each other that night, the seed of a genuine friendship was planted.

Meeting Over Music And Deli Lunches

It wasn’t until early 2018, when Superchunk played in Los Angeles, that the pair got to spend real time together. Wendt and his wife, Bernadette, picked Narducy up at his hotel for lunch at their favorite local deli. The trio shared stories about touring, family life and their mutual passion for ’90s alternative rock.

“They were funny together,” Narducy said. “It sounded like they were trying to entertain me at first but I think they just had a joyous energy.”

After lunch, Wendt and Bernadette drove Narducy back to the hotel, and by the end of the afternoon, the bassist knew he had met two of the kindest people on tour.

Sexiest Elbows And Living Room Shows

Their next memorable encounter came the following year at a living room show hosted by Club 6o3 in Baltimore. After Narducy’s set, Wendt asked to take a photograph of their elbows — a playful nod to Narducy’s viral “Sexiest Elbows” videos on YouTube.

“George was a sweet man and a true indie rock fan,” Narducy wrote in his Instagram tribute. That evening, Narducy discovered how much fans like Wendt cherish intimate performances and the backstage camaraderie that happens away from arena spotlights.

A Lasting Impact

Beyond their shared music moments, Wendt’s genuine enthusiasm for live shows and his effortless humor left a mark on the touring musician. Narducy has worked steadily across indie rock scenes since the early 2000s, collaborating with bands like Veruca Salt, Split Single and, of course, Bob Mould’s outfit. Yet it was Wendt’s unwavering fan devotion that reminded him why these decades on the road still feel meaningful.

Narducy asked followers to join him in sending condolences to Wendt’s family and friends. As he noted, it’s not every day that a chance Facebook request evolves into sincere companionship.

“My heart goes out to his family and friends,” he wrote. “He reminded me what makes this music so special.”

His post has since drawn comments from fellow musicians and fans who shared their own memories of meeting Wendt at shows or chatting online about favorite albums. In a digital age where social media can feel impersonal, the story of Jason and George stands out as a testament to the real human connections that live music can foster.

Jason Narducy continues to tour this summer with the Bob Mould Band, where he and his bandmates will revisit albums recorded at Electrical Audio and celebrate songs from Hüsker Dü to Sugar. But for Narducy, each set now carries a bittersweet reminder of the friend whose smiles in the crowd meant everything.

Whether it was an unexpected photo request or a simple shared sandwich, George Wendt’s legacy will live on in the memories of those small moments that make a tour worthwhile.

My heart goes out to his family and friends as we remember a joyful spirit who loved music as much as any of us did.
