Throwback Snapshot

Carole King surprised fans this week with a vintage black-and-white photo on her official Instagram account. The Grammy-winning artist captioned the image simply with #songwriter #caroleking #goffinkingsongs, tipping her hat to the creative partnership she formed with Gerry Goffin in the early 1960s. In the shot, King sits at a piano, her expression reflecting both pride and nostalgia for the songs that helped define a generation.

Melody And Meaning

King’s tribute comes less than a week after she posted a rare behind-the-scenes quote about her collaboration with Goffin, who co-wrote dozens of Top 10 hits alongside her. In that throwback post, she recalled:

“A good melody has a flow to it, it has an emotional journey – it takes you on a journey and it doesn’t do so in a way that’s trying to do that — it just does it. And there’s a naturalness about how something should go and I don’t know how I know that, but I do know when I hear it, and I know when I’m going off of it….Gerry (Goffin) was so good at that. Gerry has a BS meter…he didn’t suffer fools either…Gerry likes the majesty of a major chord and another major chord.”

That reflection, courtesy of Sony Music Archives, offers a window into the songwriting chemistry that produced classics such as “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “Up on the Roof,” and “Take Good Care of My Baby.” King and Goffin’s catalog earned them a place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and helped pave the way for her solo breakthrough album, Tapestry, in 1971.

Legacy And Love

To give context to today’s salute, King also shared a 1972 image photographed by Jim McCrary and courtesy of Lou Adler and Ode Records. The picture shows the duo at work in the studio, listening closely as King plays the piano. It underscores how their partnership combined lyrical storytelling with rich, memorable melodies.

Fans flooded the comments section, tagging old friends and fellow musicians, and sharing memories of hearing Goffin-King songs on their first radios. One follower wrote, “These songs shaped my childhood,” while another added, “Thank you for reminding us how powerful a simple chord progression can be.”

With social media now acting as her personal archive, King has been celebrating World Environment Day and Pride Month in earlier posts this summer. But her latest focus on songwriting roots has struck a chord on both sides of the Atlantic, where new listeners are discovering how her work with Goffin still resonates today.

The two-decade span between those raw demo sessions and today’s digital tribute highlights how timeless collaboration can be. Even after Gerry Goffin’s passing in 2014, King continues to honor the craft and camaraderie that made their songs endure for millions.

In sharing these snapshots, Carole King not only reminds us of her own storied career but also teaches a simple lesson: great songwriting is built on trust, honest feedback, and the generosity to let a melody lead the way.
