Grammy Award-winning Christian music artist Michael W. Smith has announced the release of his new song “Hymn for Communion,” a collaboration with worship leader Charity Gayle. The song, available now on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s YouTube channel, centers on the profound meaning of Christ’s sacrifice.

In his Instagram announcement, Smith shared the theological inspiration behind the song: “On the cross, Jesus Christ – who lived a sinless life – willingly took all our sins upon Himself and endured the judgment we deserve. Whenever you share in the Lord’s Supper, reflect on this truth and thank God for His great love for you because ‘the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin’ (1 John 1:7).”

The post includes a reference to communion, a sacred Christian practice that commemorates Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. Smith encourages listeners to use the song as an opportunity for spiritual reflection during this meaningful ritual.

A Legacy Of Christian Music And Ministry

With a career spanning over four decades, Michael W. Smith has established himself as one of contemporary Christian music’s most influential artists. Since his debut in the early 1980s, Smith has won three Grammy Awards, and received 45 Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association.

Beyond his musical achievements, Smith has been actively involved in various ministry efforts throughout his career. His collaboration with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) continues a long tradition of using his musical platform for evangelism and worship.

Easter Special With Franklin Graham

The release of “Hymn for Communion” coincided with Easter weekend, when Smith participated in a special Easter broadcast with Franklin Graham titled “Easter from the Ashes.” The program, which aired on Fox News and TBN, was filmed at Pepperdine University’s chapel amidst the aftermath of devastating California wildfires.

In a previous Instagram post about the special, Smith wrote: “Honored to be part of a powerful Easter special with @franklin_graham and @charity_gayle worshiping together and sharing the hope of the resurrection. We recorded in the chapel at @pepperdine, surrounded by the sobering remains of the California wildfires in the Palisades… absolutely unbelievable. Our prayer is that God will use this special to bring hope and lead many to Christ.”

The Easter special featured Smith and Gayle performing together, with Gayle singing her well-known worship song “Thank You Jesus for the Blood” alongside Smith.

Busy Touring Season Ahead

The new song release comes as Smith prepares for a busy touring season. He recently announced his “Beyond The Far Horizon Tour” beginning in late April, which will take him to venues across the United States.

In addition to his solo tour, Smith has also announced the “Christmas Together Tour” with fellow Christian music icons Amy Grant and CeCe Winans planned for the holiday season. The announcement describes the upcoming Christmas tour as “an unforgettable night of celebration” combining “music, worship and joy.”

Ongoing Musical Collaborations

Smith’s collaboration with Charity Gayle on “Hymn for Communion” adds to his history of meaningful musical partnerships. Gayle, known for powerful worship songs like “Thank You Jesus for the Blood,” has been gaining prominence in the contemporary worship music scene.

The pairing has already made an impact on other artists. Singer-songwriter Matthew West recently shared his excitement about working with Smith, posting: “I have a vivid memory from when I was a kid of riding my one-speed bike in the rain while listening to a cassette of Michael W. Smith and just loving every second of it. His version of ‘Awesome God’ in the early 2000s reawakened this song to a whole new generation, including me. To be in the room singing this song with him was a crazy full-circle moment.”

As Smith continues his active ministry and music career, “Hymn for Communion” stands as his latest contribution to contemporary worship, focusing believers’ attention on what he describes as “the sacrifice of Christ offering lasting hope to all who call upon His Name.”

Fans can find “Hymn for Communion” on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s YouTube channel and follow Michael W. Smith’s upcoming tour dates on his official website.
