Concert Kickoff

Friday night, May 16, saw the Portland indie-rock veterans The Dandy Warhols launch the first of four consecutive sold-out shows at Manhattan’s Bowery Ballroom. With a giant banana prop dangling above the stage and fans chanting in unison, the band set the tone for a weekend of high-octane performances that mixed deep cuts with fan favorites.

Pure Joy And Artistry

“I love witnessing the Dandys’ pure joy and artistry,” wrote photographer Lauren A. Krohn in an Instagram recap of the opening night. Capturing Courtney Taylor-Taylor and company bathed in vibrant lighting by Scott Simons, her images conveyed both the intimacy of the 575-capacity venue and the communal energy as the crowd belted out anthems across the setlist. “It never gets old hearing the whole venue singing along to this number,” she added, referring to the classic “Bohemian Like You.”

Fans echoed that sentiment on social feeds. One attendee described the weekend as “a full-circle moment” for long-time supporters, thanking the band for making each show feel like a personalized celebration. Another highlighted the smooth transition from the band’s raw rock textures to stripped-down acoustic moments, a testament to their two-decade-plus evolution.

Band Background

Formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1994, The Dandy Warhols blend garage-rock swagger with psychedelic flourishes. Frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor, lead guitarist Peter Holmström, keyboardist Zia McCabe and drummer Brent DeBoer have released eight studio albums, including the breakout Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia (2000). That record’s single “Bohemian Like You” helped cement their reputation as torchbearers of modern rock, leading to collaborations with artists across genres and placements in film and television.

Over the years, the band’s lineup has remained remarkably stable, allowing them to refine a signature sound that balances catchy hooks with experimental production. Their latest EP, Rock Remaker, features remixes by A Place To Bury Strangers and Jagz Kooner, demonstrating the group’s willingness to reimagine their work through fresh lenses.

Next Stop: Europe

While New York offered a long-awaited reunion with East Coast fans, The Dandy Warhols are already gearing up for a European summer run. An earlier Instagram blast outlined the July itinerary—spanning France, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Germany, Ireland and Portugal from July 4 through July 26. Several dates will feature special guests Detroit Motor City’s Sisters Of Your Sunshine Vapor.

Fans in Europe have been urged not to “sleep on” these shows, as the band enters what one insider called “stellar form.” Tickets for many venues sold out quickly after the Bowery residency announcement, reflecting the band’s enduring global appeal.

Though the Bowery Ballroom gigs marked only a brief stop on their US Northeast trek, they underscored The Dandy Warhols’ knack for turning each performance into a memorable event—whether through inventive stage design, setlist surprises or spontaneous fan sing-alongs.
