Obituary, the Florida death-metal icons, launch the last leg of their US tour tonight at the Knockdown Center in New York City. With only four dates left, the band is capping off a coast-to-coast run commemorating the 35th anniversary of their seminal 1990 album Cause Of Death.
Tour’s Grand Finale Hits Nyc
Tonight’s performance at the former industrial space in Queens kicks off what the band calls their “Final 4.” Formed in Tampa in 1984 under the name Xecutioner, Obituary helped define the death-metal blueprint with crushing riffs, guttural vocals and swamp-saturated grooves. Over the past six weeks, they’ve hit venues from Miami’s Churchill’s Pub to Seattle’s El Corazón, drawing crowds hungry for that classic Florida sound.
Ahead of tonight’s show, Obituary’s Instagram teased: “With only a handful of shows left on this U.S. TOUR we are looking forward to these Final 4, starting tonight in NYC!! Always a Good Time with so many friends, tonight will be no exception…Here we Go!!” Fans have been sharing clips of the stage build-outs, and the Knockdown’s warehouse vibe promises an intimate, high-energy night.
Why “cause Of Death” Still Matters
Recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa and produced by Scott Burns, Cause Of Death was Obituary’s second studio album, released on September 24, 1990. It captured the band’s classic lineup—vocalist John Tardy, guitarists Trevor Peres and James “Rick” Rozz, bassist Frank Watkins and drummer Donald Tardy—at their rawest and most inventive. Tracks like “Chopped In Half,” “Face Your Apartness” and the haunting title cut established them as forerunners of US death metal.
Critics and fans alike credit Cause Of Death with expanding death-metal’s sonic boundaries, blending savage tempos with brooding atmospheres. In an era when many peers chased speed, Obituary doubled down on brutal heaviness and memorable hooks, a formula that remains influential to this day.
