A new animated action-adventure is set to hit screens this summer, featuring some major Hollywood talent behind it. The trailer for “ASALi: Power of the Pollinators,” executive produced by Academy Award winner Viola Davis and her production company, JuVee Productions, has just been released, coinciding with Earth Day celebrations.
The animated short film, written and directed by Maya Penn, features an impressive voice cast including Whoopi Goldberg, Monique Coleman, Joy Ofodu, and Penn. The trailer, released on April 23, showcases vibrant animation centered around bee pollinators, highlighting an environmental theme appropriate for its Earth Day debut.
Star-studded Collaboration
Viola Davis, a powerhouse in Hollywood, brings her producing expertise to this environmentally conscious project through JuVee Productions, the company she runs with her husband Julius Tennon. The animation appears to be a collaborative effort involving artists from around the world, according to Penn’s announcement.
In the Instagram post sharing the trailer, Penn expressed her excitement, writing: “The wait is over! Watch the new trailer for @asalimovie 🐝 ASALi: Power of The Pollinators is an animated action adventure short written directed and lead animated by me, executive produced by @violadavis @juveeproductions and Julius Tennon.”
The post shows colorful animation featuring bee characters, suggesting a story that combines entertainment with environmental education about the critical role of pollinators in our ecosystem.
Environmental Messaging Through Animation
The timing of the trailer release on Earth Day (April 22) reinforces the project’s environmental focus. Pollinators, particularly bees, play a vital role in global ecosystems and food production—a timely theme as environmental concerns continue to grow worldwide.
“This project is so important to me, can’t wait for you all to see it this July,” Penn noted in her announcement, indicating both the film’s July release timeframe and her personal investment in the project’s message.
Viola Davis: Expanding Her Production Footprint
This animated project adds to Davis’s growing portfolio of productions through JuVee Productions. The company has been actively expanding its slate of projects across various media platforms in recent years.
Davis, who made history as the first African American woman to achieve the prestigious “EGOT” status (having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award), has been leveraging her production company to champion diverse storytelling and voices.
The animated short “ASALi: Power of the Pollinators” represents JuVee Productions’ continued commitment to “bringing dynamic storytelling, characters, and actors that reflect the world,” as Davis mentioned in a recent post about another project.
July Premiere Approaching
While no specific release date in July has been announced, fans of animation, environmental themes, and the star-studded cast can look forward to the premiere of “ASALi: Power of the Pollinators” this summer. The project appears to align with JuVee Productions’ mission of delivering content that both entertains and carries meaningful messages.
As Earth Day initiatives continue to gain prominence each year, this animated short contributes to the creative ways filmmakers and producers are addressing environmental concerns through accessible and engaging storytelling formats.
