Team Behind The Scenes

El Pez Que Fuma Film heads production, joined by creative partners Prodetiopia and Divartecine. Eterno Pictures will oversee post-production, while Miércoles de Cinefilos handles special screenings and festival strategy. This collaboration underscores the ambition to honor the original story’s gritty atmosphere with fresh cinematography, sound design and narrative scope.

A Historic Collaboration

The pair’s reunion follows an earlier tease from Fernández. In March he posted:
“Materializando un sueño: dirigir a @mimilazod como La Garza en nuestra versión de #ElPezQueFuma. Agradecido con este equipazo de talentos!”

Beyond this modern take, El Pez Que Fuma carries deep roots in Lazo’s career. Daughter Sindy Lazo recently recalled that more than 30 years ago her mother’s breakout role in the original film propelled Lazo to study acting in Rome and later led to a landmark stage production. In 1994, a sold-out season at the Teatro de la Casa Sindical de El Paraíso featured Lazo as La Garza under the direction of Jose Ignacio Cabrujas.

Since her debut in the 1970s, Mimi Lazo has built a four-decade résumé across Venezuelan film, television and theatre, earning acclaim for her versatility and depth. This latest venture not only reunites her with a longtime creative ally but also reintroduces an iconic character to a new generation.

Cameras are rolling once again on the beloved tale, and production insiders hint at behind-the-scenes sneak peeks and release updates in the coming months. With respect, admiration and genuine camaraderie leading the way, Mimi Lazo’s return to El Pez Que Fuma promises to be one of the year’s standout Venezuelan film moments.
