Christmas is coming early for fans of the Duplass brothers. Mark Duplass has announced a new holiday film titled “The Baltimorons,” directed solely by his brother Jay Duplass, which they hope to release just in time for the festive season.
The Baltimorons: A Return To Roots
In an Instagram post shared on Tuesday, Mark Duplass revealed the exciting news alongside several behind-the-scenes images from the production. The film represents a significant milestone as it marks Jay Duplass’s first solo directorial project, with Mark supporting from behind the scenes.
According to Mark, the genesis of “The Baltimorons” came from Jay’s desire to return to their filmmaking roots—working with “a tight knit cast and crew of family and friends,” reminiscent of their approach when they made their breakthrough indie film “The Puffy Chair” twenty years ago.
A Christmas Classic In The Making
Mark describes the upcoming film as “a beautiful, funny, sweet, sad, heartfelt film” that they hope to release in time for Christmas. He enthusiastically promotes it as “a Christmas classic in the making,” suggesting fans can expect the emotional depth and authentic character work the brothers have become known for, but with a holiday twist.
“This is the first film Jay has directed on his own and I had the deep pleasure of supporting him from the sidelines,” Mark wrote, highlighting the shifting dynamic between the brothers who have largely worked as a collaborative team throughout their careers.
The Duplass Brothers’ Legacy
Mark and Jay Duplass have been influential figures in independent cinema for two decades. According to Mark’s Wikipedia page, the brothers began their career with short films before breaking through with “The Puffy Chair” in 2005, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The film, made on a micro-budget of $15,000, helped establish the mumblecore movement in American independent film.
Since then, they’ve created numerous acclaimed projects together, including films like “Cyrus,” “Jeff, Who Lives at Home,” and the HBO series “Togetherness.” Their production company, Duplass Brothers Productions, has backed numerous independent films and documentaries.
What To Expect
While specific plot details about “The Baltimorons” remain under wraps, the title and Mark’s description suggest it could be set in Baltimore and likely combines the brothers’ trademark emotional authenticity with seasonal warmth.
Mark ended his announcement with a simple “More soon!” teasing that additional information about the film’s release and distribution will be forthcoming.
