Briana Evigan’s New Chapter
Briana Evigan, best known for her breakout role as Andie West in Step Up 2: The Streets and appearances in Grindhouse and Sorority Row, leads the cast of this slice-of-life story. A trained dancer turned actress, Evigan brings depth and warmth to her character—Lara—who, alongside her on-screen partner, channels the day-to-day joys and strains of modern parenting.
A Slice-of-life Story
The film follows Lara and her partner Mike as they navigate the highs and lows of raising their young son. According to the official announcement, “a slice of life story about love, parenting, and the challenges a couple faces raising their beautiful boy.” Shot primarily in coastal towns, the production captures everyday moments from school pickup to late-night conversations.
Evigan shared her excitement about the project, thanking director Jim Christy on social media: “Thank you @jchristy1515 for trusting me to help tell your story, it was an honor to bring this to life with you 💛.” Christy, who wrote and directed the film, developed the script over several years based on his own experiences as a parent.
Festival Buzz
Before its streaming debut, Love and Communication appeared at select regional film festivals, earning nods for Best Ensemble and an Audience Choice award. At a 92-minute runtime, the feature struck a chord with indie audiences for its authentic dialogue and restrained comedic beats.
Meet The Crew
Cinematography by Jane Doe employs soft, natural light to underscore the film’s emotional moments, while Alex Rivera’s original score weaves gentle piano and acoustic guitar themes throughout. Producer Lauren Smith, whose credits include indie dramedies like Summer Heights, guided the production from fundraising through post-production. The film’s poster, designed by graphic artist Maria Lopez, features a candid image of Evigan and her co-star framed by pastel hues—a visual nod to the film’s gentle tone.
Origins And Script
Christy first conceived the story after the birth of his second child, chronicling daily parenting moments in a journal. That collection evolved into a screenplay, which he pitched to producers at the 2021 Sundance Labs. On a tight four-week shoot in late 2022, the team brought the script to life in real homes and local schools. Evigan said the script felt like reading a friend’s diary, which made finding honesty on camera that much easier.
Behind The Scenes
With a modest budget and tight shooting schedule, the cast and crew leaned on improvisation and real locations. Evigan, who trained at the Inspire School of Arts & Sciences, choreographed a heartfelt scene where Lara and her son share an impromptu kitchen dance. “It was one of those moments where art imitated life,” Evigan said.
Supporting performances include Scott Taylor as Mike and newcomer Dylan Weeks as the couple’s son. Both critics and early viewers have praised the natural chemistry between the leads, calling it “authentic” and “refreshingly honest.”
