Behind The Documentary
Directed by Cristan Crocker and produced by Dogwoof, the 2021 film offers an intimate look at Minnelli’s life—from her childhood performing alongside Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli to her Academy Award–winning role in Cabaret. Drawing on never-before-seen home movies and candid interviews with collaborators such as Michael Feinstein, Billy Eichner, Sting and Christine Baranski, the documentary traces Minnelli’s highs and lows over five decades. It premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival and earned praise for its unvarnished portrait of an icon balancing stardom with personal challenges.
Minnelli’s Legacy
As the daughter of Hollywood royalty—Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli—Liza’s achievements stand on their own. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1973 for Cabaret and earned Emmy and Tony Awards for her stage and television work. The documentary revisits landmark performances, including her Tony-winning Broadway comeback in 1974 and her electrifying rendition of “New York, New York.” It also features archival clips of Minnelli’s appearances at Carnegie Hall and televised variety specials, underscoring her influence on multiple generations of entertainers.
Liza’s Ongoing Projects
Beyond streaming her life story, Minnelli is engaging fans for her upcoming memoir, Kids, Wait Till You Hear This! In a recent Instagram call (https://www.instagram.com/p/DJvFnUtppH5/), she asked followers to share candid concert snaps and backstage photos they captured. “As I am nearing the completion of my 2026 intimate memoir ‘Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!’… ‘Losing my mind’ to find the right photos… ‘them’ means the magical moments you and I have shared,” she wrote. The project, co-authored with Michael Feinstein, Josh Getlin and Heidi Evans, promises a mix of “laughter, tears, and truth,” and selected images may appear in the final book with contributor credit and compensation.
