I Know What You Did Last Summer Hits Theaters July 18

Actor Austin Nichols Embodies Pastor Judah in Reboot of Gruesome Slasher Coming This Month

By Pratibha

On social media this week, Austin Nichols unveiled a new poster for the upcoming slasher revival I Know What You Did Last Summer. Sharing a moody image emblazoned with the tagline “the truth never stays buried,” the actor confirmed that the film will open exclusively in movie theatres on July 18.

Reboot Revives 1997 Classic

Sony Pictures’ latest take on the 1997 horror hit aims to blend nostalgia with fresh scares. Directed by Jennifer Kaycz, this iteration reintroduces the vengeful hook-wielding killer to a new generation, while weaving in nods to the original. The September-set thriller follows a group of friends who accidentally cover up a fatal accident, only to find themselves stalked by someone determined to settle the score.

Nichols On Pastor Judah

In an earlier Instagram feature shot by photographer John Russo, Nichols opened up about stepping into a world that fans remember fondly. “When I first read the script, I immediately thought that the balance of old blood to new blood was perfect,” he said. He praised Kaycz’s bold approach, noting, “She wanted to go big and bloody and make a splash. And I think she crushed it.” Curious about his own character’s motivations, Nichols added, “I spoke with Jennifer to get clarity about my character, Pastor Judah, and learn as much information as possible so I could do my job the best I could.”

From The Gram: Teased By Nichols

Nichols’ official Instagram post (https://www.instagram.com/p/DKwwfzTsj9L/) shows him silhouetted against a crimson backdrop, clutching a weathered Bible as droplets of red hint at the film’s graphic edge. The simple caption—“the truth never stays buried #IKnowWhatYouDidLastSummer is exclusively in movie theatres July 18.”—doubles as both warning and invitation.

Plot & Co-stars

While Nichols anchors the story as the eerie Pastor Judah, the cast includes Cailee Spaeny, Justice Smith, Madison Iseman and better-known faces from the first film. Together they navigate a suspense-packed narrative that promises plenty of jump scares and some surprisingly dark emotional beats. Rumor has it that Kaycz’s script doesn’t shy away from grisly set-pieces—a feature that Nichols teased in interviews, hinting at high-stakes scenes in the film’s final act.

Nichols’ Career & Directorial Debut

A graduate of the University of Southern California’s Theatre program, Nichols first made waves on One Tree Hill and later appeared in The Day After Tomorrow and The Walking Dead. Beyond acting, he recently stepped behind the camera: his feature directorial debut, The Salamander King, premiered at the Dallas International Film Festival in April. In an Instagram announcement, he thanked the festival team and cast for supporting his transition to filmmaker.

With I Know What You Did Last Summer set to drop in just a few weeks, Nichols has one more role to juggle before the credits roll. Whether he’s preaching ominous sermons or outwitting a relentless killer, his turn as Pastor Judah looks set to be the standout performance in this blood-soaked revival.

Fans can mark their calendars now: the truth really won’t stay buried when the lights dim on July 18.
