Frameline’s Inclusive Initiative
Frameline, the San Francisco–based LGBTQ+ film festival nearing its 48th edition, has announced a new access program designed specifically for transgender community members. In a post shared on March 28 by Emmy-nominated actress and activist Laverne Cox, Frameline confirmed it will offer complimentary tickets to trans folks for the documentary Heightened Scrutiny. “Frameline is offering FREE tickets for trans people. Reserve your spot at frameline.org/heightenedscrutiny,” Cox wrote, tagging the film fest’s reservation page.
Since its debut in 1977, Frameline has championed queer storytelling and broadened opportunities for underrepresented voices. This latest move reinforces its commitment to accessibility and ensures that trans viewers can join conversations sparked by one of the most talked-about documentaries on anti-trans legislation.
Spotlight On ‘heightened Scrutiny’
Heightened Scrutiny, directed by award-winning filmmaker Sam Feder, follows a cast of legal experts and activists as they navigate a rapidly changing legal landscape for trans rights. The film features high-profile figures including ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio, Tony Award nominee Elliot Page, drag artist Miss Peppermint, veteran journalist Gina Chua, and Laverne Cox herself. Through candid interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, viewers gain a front-row seat to the unfolding battles over anti-trans bills in various states.
Earlier this year, the documentary received prominent placement as the centerpiece screening at NewFest in New York City. In a separate Instagram post, Cox highlighted the NewFest event: “Join us for the centerpiece screening of #HeightenedScrutiny at @NewFest on May 30 at the @svatheatre in #NewYork,” she captioned. That evening’s panel included filmmakers and cast members, fostering dialogue on legal strategies and lived experiences.
Cox’s Call To Action
As an outspoken advocate for trans rights, Laverne Cox has leveraged her platform to amplify the voices of trans individuals in film and media. Her March 28 post not only alerted followers to free Frameline tickets but also underlined the urgency of the film’s message. By offering access without cost, Frameline and Cox hope to lower barriers for those who often face discrimination or financial constraints when attending cultural events.
Beyond promoting screenings, Cox maintains an engaging Instagram feed that blends activism with her signature style. She recently reflected on the therapeutic power of fashion—mixing archival Mugler pieces to celebrate trans beauty and resilience. While that post offered a moment of lightness, her message around Heightened Scrutiny carries a clear call: engage, learn, and support.
Frameline’s free-ticket initiative for trans attendees runs throughout the festival screenings of Heightened Scrutiny. Seats are limited, and interested guests can secure their passes through the official Frameline website. In doing so, they join a growing community committed to visibility, understanding, and solidarity.
From San Francisco to New York and beyond, Heightened Scrutiny continues to spark conversation—and now, with this inclusive ticket program, the film is more accessible than ever to the people whose stories it tells.
