Actress Elsie Fisher has announced a special screening of the cult classic musical film “The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T” at Roxy Cinema in New York City. The screening, scheduled for May 4th, will feature a rare IB technicolor print in 16mm format of this unique Dr. Seuss-penned musical.
Fisher shared the news through her Instagram account, highlighting the film’s fantastical elements and promising some “extra bonus goodies and surprises” for attendees.
“The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T” stands as the only feature film written by children’s author Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel). Released in 1953, the film has developed a devoted cult following over the decades despite being a commercial disappointment upon its initial release.
The film stars Hans Conried, famously known as the voice of Captain Hook, portraying the “fabulous” Dr. Terwilliker. Fisher described the character as “a fascist piano teacher who rules musical nightmare-land with iron… Fingers!”
The Instagram post showcases vibrant images from the film, displaying its distinctive Seussian visual style with elaborate fantasy sets, surreal costumes, and the technicolor brilliance that made it a visual marvel of its time. One image shows the film’s famous giant piano, where Dr. Terwilliker forces 500 boys to practice simultaneously.
Cinematic Treasures At The Roxy
This screening follows Fisher’s previous cinema event at the Roxy. In February, she hosted a showing of Claude Chabrol’s “Ten Days’ Wonder” from her personal 16mm collection. In her post about that event, Fisher expressed it was “a personal favorite film” and “a rare chance to see it on the big screen.”
The successful February screening appears to have paved the way for this upcoming May event. In a post from February 23rd, Fisher thanked attendees: “THX to everyone for coming out for this, so wonderful to screen a personal favorite at @roxycinemanyc surrounded by a sea of gorgeous faces!”
Fisher’s Instagram activity reveals she’s developed a passion for classic and cult cinema, particularly rare 16mm prints. Her enthusiasm for sharing these cinematic treasures with audiences suggests a growing interest in film curation and preservation.
The Actress Behind The Screening
Elsie Fisher, now 22 (as revealed in a recent birthday post where she wrote, “If ya know me you knew I turned twenty-Two!”), first gained widespread recognition for her breakthrough performance in the critically acclaimed film “Eighth Grade” (2018). Her portrayal of socially anxious teenager Kayla Day earned her a Golden Globe nomination and established her as a rising talent in Hollywood.
Fisher began her career as a voice actress, most notably providing the voice of Agnes in the first two “Despicable Me” films. Her filmography includes roles in “The Addams Family” animated film, “Castle Rock,” and the 2022 “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” reboot.
Beyond her acting career, Fisher appears to be cultivating interests in cinema history and film exhibitions, as evidenced by her involvement with Roxy Cinema screenings.
Located in the Tribeca neighborhood, Roxy Cinema has established itself as a destination for cinephiles seeking curated film experiences beyond mainstream offerings. The venue specializes in screening rare prints, cult classics, and independent films in an intimate setting.
For film enthusiasts, particularly fans of Dr. Seuss’s unique visual imagination or those interested in rare musical films of the 1950s, this screening presents a unique opportunity to experience a technicolor cult classic in its intended format.
The event continues Fisher’s apparent interest in sharing cinematic treasures with audiences, turning her Instagram platform into not just a personal showcase but a channel for film preservation and appreciation.
