Austin Nichols has horror fans on high alert with his latest Instagram tease. The actor recently posted that the trailer for “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is coming soon, telling followers to “stay tuned” for the highly anticipated preview.
The Instagram image shows what appears to be a teaser for the iconic horror franchise, featuring the familiar hook-wielding aesthetic that fans will recognize from the original films. This follows a pattern of recent posts from Nichols hinting at the project’s development.
While Nichols hasn’t explicitly stated his role in the new project, his continuous updates suggest he has significant involvement. The actor, known for his versatile performances across television and film, appears to be either starring in or possibly even directing the new entry in the slasher series.
For those unfamiliar with the franchise, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” originally debuted in 1997, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr. The film follows a group of friends who cover up a hit-and-run accident, only to be terrorized by a hook-wielding killer exactly one year later. The original film spawned a sequel in 1998 titled “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” and a third installment, “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer,” in 2006.
While details about the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer” project remain limited, the 2025 release date indicates this is a major theatrical release rather than a streaming project. The original film was based on the 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan, though it took significant creative liberties with the source material to create its slasher movie framework.
The franchise was previously revived as an Amazon Prime Video series in 2021, though it received mixed reviews and wasn’t renewed for a second season. This upcoming film appears to be a separate project with a traditional theatrical release.
Horror reboots and legacy sequels have seen tremendous success in recent years, with franchises like “Halloween,” “Scream,” and “Evil Dead” finding new life with modern audiences while honoring their original entries. This new “I Know What You Did Last Summer” seems positioned to follow that successful formula.
As Nichols instructed in his post, horror fans should definitely “stay tuned” for the trailer, which will likely provide our first real look at how this new entry will honor or reimagine the hook-wielding killer that terrorized audiences in the late 1990s. Trivia
