In celebration of Earth Day, Oscar-nominated actor Don Cheadle has resurrected his infamous Captain Planet character, delighting fans with a new comedic video on Instagram. The post, captioned “Captain Planet is branching out,” shows Cheadle fully embracing the environmental superhero role that first went viral years ago.

The Instagram video shows Cheadle in character as a comically intense version of the eco-friendly superhero from the 1990s cartoon “Captain Planet and the Planeteers.” In the clip, Cheadle appears to be expanding Captain Planet’s environmental crusade into new territory, maintaining the humorous approach that made his previous interpretations of the character so popular.

Captain Planet’s Comedic Return

This isn’t the first time Cheadle has donned the blue-skinned, green-haired persona of Captain Planet. In an earlier post from the same Earth Day celebration, another video was shared with the caption “don’t mess with Captain Planet in the office,” featuring Cheadle alongside Charles Ingram. These skits continue the tradition of Cheadle’s darker, more intense take on the environmental superhero, which originated in a series of viral Funny or Die sketches where his Captain Planet had a disturbing tendency to turn humans into trees.

The latest Earth Day posts include tags to several collaborators including Charles Ingram, Budd Anthony Diaz, Clay Tatum, and Allan McLeod, suggesting this was a collaborative effort among industry friends to create awareness for environmental issues while entertaining audiences.

Environmental Advocacy Beyond Acting

Cheadle’s Captain Planet revival aligns with his real-life environmental activism. Recently, the actor was recognized as part of the “National Geographic 33” – an initiative honoring global trailblazers making profound impacts in conservation, science, policy, and storytelling. In a post about the honor, Cheadle mentioned his work with The Solutions Project, an organization focused on clean energy solutions.

In February 2024, Cheadle also participated in Black Climate Week, appearing in a video that highlighted Black-led climate solutions. The campaign emphasized how Black communities are leading innovations to fight the climate crisis through sustainable initiatives that create jobs, lower energy bills, and combat extreme heat.
