Shannon Lee Recognized For AANHPI Month
Shannon Lee accepted a special honor at the Academy Museum on May 15, joining city and community leaders in celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. In an Instagram post accompanying photos from the event, Lee wrote, “It’s such an honor to have received this award from @councilmemberjohnlee at the @academymuseum for AANHPI month!” The award was presented by Councilmember John Lee, underscoring Lee’s contributions to cultural advocacy.
Advancing Aanhpi Visibility Through Podcast
This recognition follows Shannon Lee’s recent work curating a Bruce Lee Foundation takeover of the Bruce Lee Podcast. In April and May, she highlighted voices from the AANHPI community—inviting guests like Twinjas martial artists Ollie and Jonny Ho, MMA fighter Austin Liu, and chef Judy Joo—to discuss heritage, mental health, and creativity. Her Instagram announcements noted each episode’s focus on representation and well-being, amplifying diverse perspectives.
Bruce Lee Foundation’s Ongoing Mission
As CEO of the Bruce Lee Foundation, Lee oversees programs aimed at promoting Bruce Lee’s philosophy of “Be Water,” blending martial arts, arts education, and cultural exchange. Earlier this year, the Foundation launched educational workshops in Los Angeles schools and partnered with community centers to offer free martial-arts classes for underserved youth. At the gala, Lee thanked supporters and affirmed her commitment to expanding these initiatives throughout AANHPI Heritage Month and beyond.
About Shannon Lee
Born in 1969 to Bruce Lee and Linda Lee Cadwell, Shannon Lee has built a multifaceted career as an actress, martial artist, and business leader. After studying acting in Los Angeles, she appeared in films and television before turning her focus to preserving her father’s legacy. In 2002, she founded the Bruce Lee Foundation to promote cross-cultural learning and creativity. Lee holds a degree in business from the University of Southern California, and she’s served as executive producer on several Bruce Lee documentaries.
At the Academy Museum event, Lee joined fellow honorees from arts, education, and civic sectors. The evening featured a keynote address on AANHPI contributions to film history, museum tours highlighting Asian American filmmakers, and performances by local dance troupes. Lee’s award—presented on a stage overlooking the Hollywood skyline—reflects her ongoing efforts to advance AANHPI representation in media, arts, and community outreach.
This recognition at one of Los Angeles’ premier cultural institutions spotlights Lee’s dual role as a guardian of her father’s philosophy and a proactive leader in today’s AANHPI advocacy. Moving forward, Lee plans to expand the Foundation’s digital content and youth-mentorship programs, ensuring that Bruce Lee’s legacy continues to inspire new generations across diverse communities.
