On Earth Day 2025, actress and activist Shannon Elizabeth took to Instagram to deliver a powerful message about wildlife conservation through her foundation, emphasizing the critical connection between protecting nature and humanity’s survival.
“Today, on #EarthDay, we’re reminded that every species, every habitat, and every heartbeat in the wild is connected to our own,” Elizabeth wrote in her Instagram post on Monday. The “American Pie” and “Scary Movie” actress shared a compelling carousel of wildlife images featuring rhinos and other endangered species in their natural habitats.
The post showcases the work of the Shannon Elizabeth Foundation, which focuses on protecting vulnerable wildlife populations and their ecosystems. The images display close-up shots of rhinos, including what appears to be the foundation’s ambassador rhino named Munu, alongside scenes of African wilderness and conservation efforts.
“At the Shannon Elizabeth Foundation, we fight every day to protect the planet’s most vulnerable—its endangered wildlife and the habitats they call home. From black rhinos to rainforests, from local communities to global action, this is a fight we all share,” Elizabeth’s caption continued.
The Shannon Elizabeth Foundation has become increasingly active in wildlife conservation efforts, particularly focused on rhino protection in South Africa. The organization operates through the Khusela Endangered Wildlife Sanctuary, which provides a safe haven for threatened species, particularly black rhinos, which are critically endangered.
Last month, on World Wildlife Day, Elizabeth shared details about the foundation’s specific initiatives at Khusela Sanctuary. “Khusela Endangered Wildlife Sanctuary is a safe haven for Africa’s most vulnerable species,” she posted. The foundation’s work includes protecting rescued and rehabilitated wildlife, strengthening security and anti-poaching patrols, and building a wildlife hospital and quarantine enclosures.
Elizabeth has demonstrated her commitment to these causes beyond social media. Earlier this year, she shared information about wildlife trafficking awareness, posting images from an exhibit at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport designed to educate international travelers about the illegal wildlife trade. “Together, let’s stop all trafficking of animals & their parts. Animals belong in their natural habitat & should never be stolen from their home in the wild or their life with their families!” she wrote in that post.
Elizabeth’s journey from Hollywood star to dedicated conservationist represents a significant career evolution. The actress first gained widespread fame in the late 1990s with her breakout role in American Pie (1999), followed by appearances in Scary Movie and other films. While continuing to work in entertainment, she has increasingly devoted her time to animal rights and conservation causes over the past decade.
Beyond her foundation work, Elizabeth has been actively involved in other conservation-related events. Last year, she hosted the first Annual Rhino Rumble Championship, a poker tournament fundraiser for the Shannon Elizabeth Foundation. The actress has also built strong relationships with other conservationists in the field. In February, she shared a heartfelt tribute to wildlife veterinarian Dr. Jana Pretorius, calling her “one of my favorite humans on the planet” and highlighting their commitment to wildlife protection.
Elizabeth’s Earth Day post concluded with a call for public involvement: “Join us in defending the wild. Stand with us, act with us, and speak for those who can’t.”
As Earth Day initiatives continue worldwide, Elizabeth’s message serves as a reminder of the collective action needed to address environmental challenges and protect endangered species.
