Shangela Applauds “noah’s Arc: The Movie”
Drag icon Shangela took to Instagram to share her excitement for filmmaker Patrik Ian Polk’s latest project, Noah’s Arc: The Movie, set to premiere June 20 on Paramount+ and Showtime. In her celebratory post, Shangela praised Polk’s fresh film on Paramount+ & Showtime, honoring queer TV milestones, crediting the original TV series Noah’s Arc and his first film, Punks, for bringing Black gay love stories to screens for the first time.
The Return Of A Groundbreaking Story
Patrik Ian Polk made waves in the early 2000s with Punks, a 2000 indie film exploring the lives of gay Black men. He followed with Noah’s Arc, a landmark TV series that debuted in 2005 on Logo. The show was celebrated for its candid portrayal of friendship, romance and professional life in the Black LGBTQ community. In her post, Shangela wrote, “The series Noah’s Arc (and his first film PUNKS) was the first time I saw Black Gay LOVE stories on tv and the big screen…so it was PURE JOY last night watching this family of actors, producers and crew reunite for another round of MAGIC.”
A Star-studded Reunion
Monday’s screening premiere in Los Angeles brought together the cast and crew that built the Noah’s Arc universe. Shangela gave a special shout-out to “THE DOLLS” in the film, including her friend Kennedy Davenport, known offstage as Kennedy D. The reunion also featured industry talents such as Jensen Atwood, Darryl Stephens and Rodney Chester, who helped define the series’ cult following. Shangela cheekily added, “Thx friend Corbin Lynell for attending the screening premiere with yo loud country popcorn munchin’ sis,” highlighting the celebratory atmosphere at the event.
Tribute To Grangela
In a more personal note, Shangela shared gratitude for a fan gift: a “Grangela” necklace she received at a meet-and-greet in 2023. The drag performer explained, “I hope u see this … it means a lot to be able to carry the spirit of my Gram with me like this.” This tribute underscores the blend of public achievement and private remembrance that has shaped Shangela’s career.
