Ronda Rousey, former UFC champion, Olympic medalist, and actress, is stepping into a new arena – graphic novels. The combat sports icon shared on Instagram that limited-edition copies of her graphic novel, “Expecting the Unexpected,” are still available for preorder until April 30.
The Instagram post shows the cover of the graphic novel featuring dramatic artwork. The post describes the project as being “filled with epic fights and a story that will leave you breathless.”
The graphic novel is a collaborative effort, featuring Rousey as the writer alongside acclaimed comic book artist Mike Deodato Jr., whose portfolio includes work for Marvel Comics. The creative team is rounded out with coloring by Marko Lesko and lettering by Sal Cipriano.
This graphic novel represents another creative venture for Rousey, who has successfully transitioned from Olympic judo medalist to UFC champion to WWE superstar, and has also appeared in Hollywood films including “The Expendables 3” and “Furious 7.”
Rousey made history as the first American woman to earn an Olympic medal in judo, winning bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She later became the first female fighter signed to the UFC and played a pivotal role in introducing women’s MMA to the organization.
In recent years, Rousey has balanced her professional endeavors with motherhood. Her recent Instagram posts show her gradually returning to training after giving birth. In one post, she shared footage of herself practicing judo throws, writing, “First throws with @ranawillink on the crash pad now that my ligaments are officially tightened back up – nice to know that the years of countless repetition are still paying off.”
Another post shows her doing ground and pound drills with the caption: “Found my phone case during ground and pound drills, then smacked myself in the face with the dummy. Re-growing pains are real lol. I found my rhythm eventually though.”
