Celebrity Duo Dives Into Escape Room Fun

Jon Heder and Efren Ramirez—best known for their iconic roles in the cult hit Napoleon Dynamite—recently switched gears from small-town Idaho antics to hair-pin turns of mystery solving. The duo made a surprise appearance at The Exit Games in Wilmington, North Carolina, where they tackled the facility’s signature scenario, “Hangover at Riddler State.”

Both actors share a long history onscreen: Heder’s deadpan portrayal of the title character and Ramirez’s breakout turn as Pedro Sanchez won over audiences and inspired fan art, memes, and a devoted following. Off-camera, the pair have maintained a tight bond; their rapport made the transition to collaborative puzzle solving seem like a natural extension of their comedic partnership.

Escaping In Wilmington: Hangover At Riddler State

The entertainment complex shared the news on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/p/DJ7t_QzyjiT/), writing, “We were so hyped to hear that the awesome duo @thereal.efrenramirez and @hederjon wanted to come take on ‘Hangover at Riddler State’ here at The Exit Games. It was such a blast to host them and we cannot thank them enough for supporting us!” The post captures Heder and Ramirez flashing victory signs in front of the game’s neon-lit entrance after cracking a tricky cipher hidden in the recreation room–turned–lab.

Set in a dimly lit cabin behind the fictional Riddler State Lodge, “Hangover at Riddler State” plunges participants into the aftermath of a bachelor party gone sideways. Clues range from scattered party invitations to cryptic beer-branded puzzles, all designed to test teamwork and adaptability under pressure. Though Heder and Ramirez are old pros at improv, the getaway twist still had them racing the 60-minute clock to secure the antidote and escape unscathed.

As they braved faux jail cells and cryptic riddles, the pair leaned on improvisational flair honed from decades of on-screen collaboration. Both have credited their early work together—dating back to the 2004 sleeper comedy—for the easy camaraderie that kept spirits high even when the clock ticked down to zero.

A Throwback To Liverpool’s Breakout Adventure

This Wilmington pit stop isn’t Heder and Ramirez’s first foray into live puzzles. In June 2022, the duo toured the UK for Comic Con Liverpool and paid a call to Breakout’s Warped and Spellbound games. A Breakout Instagram post from that visit (https://www.instagram.com/p/DJSB_LDM6hb/) recalls, “They were visiting Liverpool for Comic Con and couldn’t resist a trip to Breakout to play our Warped and Spellbound games! We loved meeting them and they were absolutely BRILLIANT in the games!”

Fans at the Liverpool event reported that Ramirez cracked one of the toughest locks in record time, while Heder kept fellow players entertained with improvised one-liners. The visit blurred the lines between celebrity meet-and-greet and collaborative gaming, setting a template for future pop-culture puzzle crossovers.

Touring The Nation With Napoleon Dynamite Live

Off-camera, Heder and Ramirez are deep into their “Napoleon Dynamite Live” stage tour, which features 22 stops across the U.S. The multimedia show blends film clips, live Q&A, and sketch comedy—giving longtime fans fresh ways to shout “Vote for Pedro” in person. Ramirez, born Efrain Anthony Ramírez in 1973, earned an ALMA Award nomination for his breakout comedic performance. Since Napoleon Dynamite, he’s appeared in Nacho Libre, The House Bunny, and the Netflix series Dark. Heder, born in 1977, juggles acting and writing, with voice credits in Monster House and Surf’s Up, and contributions to independent and mainstream projects alike.

Reviews have noted that even casual moviegoers leave with a new appreciation for the film’s offbeat humor, thanks to the duo’s behind-the-scenes anecdotes and live improvisation. The tour kicked off in April and runs through the summer, giving fans months to catch their favorite pair live.

Both stars have leveraged their status to back community-driven events. Ramirez appeared this past May in Spokane, Washington for “A Possible Dream,” a stage production exploring American Dream themes through original music and storytelling. Heder has supported youth arts workshops and screenwriting panels, often emphasizing collaboration and creativity—values that dovetail neatly with escape-room dynamics.

Inside The Exit Games Phenomenon

Opened in 2019, Wilmington’s The Exit Games has quickly established itself as one of North Carolina’s top escape-room destinations. With a rotating lineup of themes—from haunted houses to time-travel labs—its immersive sets and atmospheric sound design have earned a 4.8-star average on TripAdvisor. The venue’s staff tailors difficulty levels for novice and veteran teams alike, making puzzle nights accessible to families, corporate groups, and cosplay-fueled conventions.

The duo’s willingness to engage with hands-on puzzles reflects a broader shift among celebrities toward interactive experiences—an evolution that keeps fan communities energized long after a film’s release. By blending onstage events with escape rooms, Heder and Ramirez underscore the expanding landscape of modern fandom, where movies, live entertainment, and puzzle culture intersect.

From Idaho’s small-town set to Wilmington’s high-stakes mystery, the Napoleon Dynamite duo shows there’s more than one way to capture an audience’s imagination.
