Nyc Debut At New York City Center

Rob Madge, the Olivier-nominated theatre maker behind My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?), is gearing up for their first American performances at New York City Center in just three weeks. The autobiographical one-person musical chronicles Madge’s upbringing in a devout family in the English countryside, weaving together anecdotes of childhood ambition, family dinners gone awry, and the spark of queer identity. Fans can secure tickets now at MySonsAQueer.com before seats sell out.

“Just a spoonful of My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?) will brighten your day!” Madge teased on Instagram, unveiling the New York run. With just a stool, a lamp, and Madge’s magnetic personality, the show blends stand-up comedy, catchy original songs, and memoir-style storytelling into an intimate theatrical experience.

Bonus Dates & Tdf Night

Demand for tickets skyrocketed almost immediately, prompting Madge to add two extra performances at NYCC. “When You Wish Upon a Star… You Get MORE SHOWS!” read one announcement, shared on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/p/DJW7rF8pcVm/). The two new dates expand the run and give more audiences a chance to catch what has become one of the most buzzed-about shows of the summer season.

In a separate post (https://www.instagram.com/p/DJ619KzOcdN/), Madge revealed a special partnership with non-profit Theatre Development Fund. As part of the TDF Night on June 12, the show will be presented as an open caption performance. Ten percent of all full-price ticket sales for that performance will be donated to TDF’s student initiatives, and free tickets will be provided to students, reinforcing Madge’s commitment to inclusive theatre and supporting the next generation of artists.

From Kitkat Club Origins To New York

My Son’s A Queer made its debut at London’s legendary KitKat Club last year, where Madge alternated between appearing as Emcee one night and Sally Bowles the next. An early Instagram teaser announced, “One week to go until @robmadge02 and @hannahfkdodd make their #KitKatClub debuts,” complete with a moody backstage shot (https://www.instagram.com/p/DJ84dp7MsjZ/).

During rehearsals, Madge shared candid glimpses: “First day on the stage (it’s giving competition winner)… I’m so fuckin excited,” they captioned a series of joyful cast photos. That energy translated into sold-out performances, rave reviews, and an Olivier nomination, all pointing toward a transfer to a larger London venue before making the leap across the pond.

Performance Details & How To Book

Performances are scheduled Tuesday through Sunday at 7:30pm, with matinees on Sundays. Ticket prices range from $49 to $79, and student and senior discounts are available through TDF. All shows will take place in New York City Center’s main theatre. To reserve seats, visit MySonsAQueer.com or call the box office at (212) 581-1212.

Why Audiences Are Buzzing

At its core, My Son’s A Queer is a story about belonging—finding the confidence to embrace who you are, even when your own family struggles to understand. Madge uses playful wordplay and self-deprecating humor to build intimacy with the audience, turning personal memories into universal moments. Songs like “Put on a Show” and “Friends and Family” underscore the emotional highs and lows that punctuate the narrative.

The decision to include an accessible open caption night and collaborate with TDF highlights the production’s dedication to equity. Madge’s early post calling the partnership “a little more pixie dust” reflects a playful spirit that still addresses real-world issues like access to the arts.

With the countdown at just three weeks, theatre enthusiasts, queer audiences, and first-time ticket buyers alike have a rare opportunity. Seats are filling fast, and the addition of bonus shows means there’s extra room for eager fans—and anyone curious about a fresh, heartfelt musical that’s already captured London’s imagination.

Madge’s journey, from writing monologues for a drama-school contest to dominating the London fringe circuit and now taking on New York City Center, is a testament to perseverance and self-belief. As Madge likes to say, sometimes all it takes is a single show to change your life—and this June, American audiences will discover precisely why.
