On Thursday, June 19, Isola Brooklyn throws open its doors at 361 Metropolitan Ave for a free Juneteenth celebration called Movie-oke. Hosted by comedian Hannibal Buress, the evening invites attendees to step into legendary moments from Black cinema and perform them live—whether you know every line or want to freestyle your way through.
From Screen To Stage: Movie-oke’s Live Twist
Guests can sign up to reenact moments from beloved films—Love & Basketball, The Color Purple, Training Day, Set It Off, and many more. The concept, which Buress has helped popularize, turns movie night into an immersive playground. Imagine quoting Taraji P. Henson’s every fierce syllable or riffing through Will Smith’s Training Day monologue, all while your friends cheer you on.

About The Host: Hannibal Buress
Hannibal Buress rose to fame with his deadpan style on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and as co-host of The Eric Andre Show. A prolific stand-up tour headliner, Buress has also appeared in films like Neighbors and Tag, and provided voice work in animated hits such as The Secret Life of Pets. Born in Chicago and now based in Brooklyn, he’s no stranger to blending humor with social commentary.
On June 12 he surprised Salt Lake City audiences with a pop-up show at Wiseguys Comedy, and earlier this month made stops in Missoula, Spokane, and Seattle. Movie-oke marks his first major Juneteenth-themed event in New York City.
