Actress Michael Michele has shared a powerful tribute to her parents’ nearly 60-year interracial marriage, highlighting how their love persevered despite once being illegal under American anti-miscegenation laws.

In her heartfelt Instagram post, Michele shared a black and white photograph of her parents, standing side by side and smiling warmly at the camera. The image captures a deep bond that has endured for over six decades.

Love That Defied The Law

“Coming upon 60+ years together,” Michele wrote in her caption. “In a world seeing so much division and separation; an ‘us’ and ‘them’ narrative, LOVE can be the answer.”

The “Equalizer” actress went on to acknowledge a painful historical reality: “America created a LAW, a law that would have jailed my father for loving my mother. Jailed my mother for loving my father. LAWS aren’t always correct.”

Michele’s post references anti-miscegenation laws that once criminalized interracial marriages in many U.S. states until the landmark Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia in 1967, which struck down such laws nationwide.

“I wouldn’t be here on this planet, had they followed the LAW,” she continued. “LOVE is always the final equalizer.”

Concluding her tribute, Michele wrote: “I stand proud and tall, internally and externally because of these two people.”

Michele’s Career And Background

Michael Michele was born on August 30, 1966, in Evansville, Indiana. Her father is Jerry Williams, a white businessman, and her mother is Thersa, who is Black. Michele’s biracial heritage has been an important part of her identity throughout her life and career.

Michele has built an impressive acting career spanning several decades. She is well known for her roles as Dr. Cleo Finch on the NBC medical drama “ER” and Detective Rene Sheppard on the police procedural “Homicide: Life on the Street.” More recently, she has appeared in the reboot of the TV series “Dynasty” as Dominique Deveraux and currently plays Desiree Perez on “The Equalizer.”

In a recent post, Michele shared her excitement about working on “The Equalizer,” posting behind-the-scenes photos with co-star Lorraine Toussaint. “When we’re not calling each other asking about Trees, farmers markets or God forbid, BEARS, at our respective Upstate NY homes, well… We’re doing what we DO,” she wrote, offering a glimpse into her off-screen life in upstate New York.

From Football To Film

Just last month, Michele shared an interesting glimpse into her early career, posting about her role in the HBO series “1st & 10,” where she played the “First Female Kicker” on a men’s football team.

“I was cast as the ‘First Female Kicker’ on a men’s football team,” she revealed. “Honey, OJ Simpson (yes that one) was the coach and NY Jets, Lawrence Taylor, was tasked with ‘giving me a hit to take me OUT.'” Michele added that the role required “an athletic actress who could ‘run fast and ALSO kick a football!'” showcasing her versatile talents even early in her career.

Celebrating Heritage And Representation

Michele’s tribute to her parents comes at a time when conversations about racial equality and representation continue to be prominent in American society. By sharing her family’s story, she highlights both how far society has come and the ongoing importance of love transcending societal barriers.

The actress has been active on social media recently, sharing moments from her career, including her appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival and her work on “The Equalizer.” She recently posted about attending a Broadway show with writer-producer Sally Nemeth, showing her continued connection to the New York arts scene.

Michele’s celebration of her parents’ enduring relationship serves as a powerful reminder of how personal stories intersect with larger historical contexts, and how love can indeed be “the final equalizer” in the face of unjust laws and societal prejudices.

As Michele continues her work on screen, her tribute to her parents demonstrates that her personal history remains a source of strength and inspiration throughout her successful career.
