Luenell made her highly anticipated return to Harlem’s historic Apollo Theater on May 16, headlining for a second time in as many years—and she brought reinforcements. The comedian debuted her own troupe of dancers, cheekily dubbed the “Lue-Boos,” transforming her stand-up set into a full-scale variety show.
Lue-boos Step Into The Spotlight
In an Instagram caption, Luenell wrote: “More APOLLO moments… Prepare to be sick o’ me because I have about two more bundles. Being that this was my second time headlining at the APOLLO I wanted to do something different than last time. Meet my own version of The Fly Girls… my LUE-BOOS‼️ I’m going to try to have them open up for all my Theatre shows from now on. I believe they add the pop and spice that I need to take my shows to the next level. Let me thank them now… HUGE God Bless yous go out to @vwalls_ @angel_inniss @flawssandall__ and my daughter/choreographer @itsdanelledoee Baby, once again you and your girls showed up and showed out for Mommy and Harlem and I could not be more excited and grateful to be sharing the stage with you all on such an iconic night. More to come… gotta give a shout out to the Wardrobe department of One @ariel.meii 💋💃🏽👯♂️🙌🏾😃.”
Luenell’s Lue-Boos—Venessa Walls, Angel Inniss, Flawssandall, and dancer-turn-choreographer Danielle “Danelle” Doe—hit the stage in colorful, ’90s-inspired streetwear, complete with signature berets and sparkling bodysuits. Their high-energy routines, set to throwback New Jack Swing and hip-hop tracks, punctuated Luenell’s rapid-fire jokes and storytelling.
Sell-out Success At The Apollo
Tickets for the show sold out weeks in advance, and the audience didn’t disappoint. Fans cheered for every punchline, camera phones raised high as the dancers flipped, kicked, and sashayed across the proscenium. After the performance, Luenell posted another Instagram update (https://www.instagram.com/p/DJyiffERIxU/) featuring a backstage shot and the caption: “I’M EXHAUSTED and I have no words other than…I LOVE YOU NEW YORK and Thank You for lovin’ me Back 🎤 @apollotheater #SOLDOUT #AGAIN 😘🗽🍎.”
Onlookers describe the atmosphere as electric—part comedy set, part dance concert—underscoring Luenell’s knack for blending humor with spectacle. The comedian’s decision to spotlight a dedicated dance crew echoes the legendary Fly Girls of the ’90s MTV era, but with a personal twist that speaks to her brand of bold, unapologetic entertainment.
A Legacy Of Laughter
Born Luenell Campbell in 1959, Luenell has spent more than three decades carving out a space in comedy and film. She earned the title “Queen of Comedy” after co-hosting BET’s ComicView in the ’90s, and her credits span roles in Borat, Coyote Ugly, and on television in Half Baked and The Parkers. Beyond acting, she’s a frequent presence at comedy festivals and late-night talk shows.
Headlining the Apollo—often a milestone for rising stars—carries special weight for a veteran like Luenell. It’s a nod to her enduring appeal and her ability to reinvent herself while staying true to the Southern wit and fearless persona that first brought her acclaim.
Next On Tour
With her Lue-Boos now battle-tested on the Apollo stage, Luenell plans to bring them along for theater dates across the country. She hinted at future performances in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta, promising new choreography, guest appearances, and more of the high-voltage energy that defined her Harlem show.
As Luenell looks ahead, one thing is clear: her act isn’t just about stand-up anymore. It’s a full production, balancing comedic timing with dance breaks, costumed vignettes, and surprise cameos. For fans who’ve followed her since ComicView days, the evolution feels both exciting and inevitable.
Luenell’s second headline at the Apollo proved that even after decades in the business, she’s still finding fresh ways to surprise—and her Lue-Boos are just getting started.
