Comedian and actress Leah Lamarr has taken to Instagram to celebrate the theatrical resurrection of director Kevin Smith’s 1999 cult classic film “Dogma,” which is set to return to theaters on June 5th after years of being unavailable due to rights issues.
Lamarr shared her excitement about her friend Alessandra’s work in bringing the film back to audiences. “So proud of my incredibly talented multi-hyphenate friend @tastethevino on all her hard work resurrecting one of the most genius @thatkevinsmith films of all time — DOGMA!” Lamarr wrote.
The Controversies And Cult Status Of Dogma
“Dogma” has long held a special place in film history as one of Smith’s most ambitious and controversial works. The religious satire sparked significant backlash upon its original release, with protests from various religious groups who considered its content blasphemous.
Despite the controversy—or perhaps partly because of it—the film developed a devoted following over the years. However, due to complex ownership and distribution rights issues, it has been largely unavailable on streaming platforms and has been out of theatrical circulation for years.
In her post, Lamarr praises Smith’s creative vision: “Kevin created a true comedic masterpiece that also makes you THINK.” She highlights the film’s impressive ensemble cast, which includes Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Salma Hayek, George Carlin, Chris Rock, Alan Rickman, Alanis Morissette, and Smith’s recurring characters Jay and Silent Bob.
The Significance Of Dogma’s Return
The return of “Dogma” to theaters represents more than just a re-release of a cult classic. The film has been notably absent from streaming platforms and has not been easily accessible to viewers for years due to rights issues.
The resurrection of “Dogma” comes at a time when many films from the late ’90s and early 2000s are finding new audiences through streaming platforms and theatrical re-releases. Smith’s film, with its star-studded cast and controversial subject matter, is poised to generate significant interest among both longtime fans and newcomers curious about this formerly hard-to-find entry in Smith’s filmography.
As Lamarr enthusiastically concludes in her post: “GO SEE IT!”
