Actress and filmmaker Lake Bell has announced the release of her debut children’s book “All About Brains: A Book About People,” which aims to help families discuss neurological differences with young children.

In an Instagram post endorsed by child psychiatrist Dr. Perry Nicholas Mandanis, the book is described as “a great conversation starter that’s authentic and important” for families navigating discussions about conditions like ADHD with their children.

Bell’s venture into children’s literature was inspired by her own family experience. According to recent interviews, the book was motivated by her daughter Nova’s epilepsy diagnosis.

Speaking on CBS Morning, Bell explained that she hopes the book serves as a starting point for parents and kids to discuss neurodiversity. The actress emphasized the importance of providing children with resources that help them understand and communicate about their unique brain functions.

The post features an endorsement from a professional in the field of child psychiatry. Dr. Perry M writes: “I’ve worked in the Child Psychiatry space for decades and get asked ‘how do I talk with my child about their ADHD’ or any number of matters of the brain? Now I have the best answer—read this book it’s your kids!”

This professional validation highlights the book’s potential value as a resource for families seeking to navigate conversations about neurological differences with children.

The timing of Bell’s book release coincides with Neurodiversity Month, as she noted in a previous post showing the first copies of her book. The publication aims to celebrate neurological differences rather than stigmatize them.

In an appearance on “All Kinds of Minds” podcast, Bell discussed “the beauty of neurodiversity” and how her book approaches these important topics.

While primarily known for her work in film and television, Bell has expanded her creative repertoire with this literary debut. She is an American actress, director, and screenwriter. In recent interviews, Bell has revealed connections between her professional and personal life that influenced the book.

“All About Brains: A Book About People” is currently available wherever books are sold. The book was published by Simon & Schuster and officially released on April 15, though pre-orders were available earlier.

The Instagram post featuring the book shows what appears to be the book cover, featuring colorful illustrations designed to appeal to young readers while addressing complex topics in an accessible way.

Bell has been actively promoting the book through various media channels. She recently appeared on TODAY, where she discussed the book with Jenna Bush Hager and Tyra Banks in a segment that reportedly involved “pickles for breakfast.”

She also discussed the book on The Sackhoff Show, where host Katee Sackhoff noted that Bell’s book was “aimed at helping kids across the narrow diversity spectrum find their voice.”

Through these appearances and her social media presence, Bell continues to advocate for greater understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity, using her platform to help families navigate important conversations about brain differences with compassion and clarity.
