Saturday Spotlight: Josh Malerman At Tcc42025
Cherry Capital Comic Con returns for its 2025 edition with more than 70 artists, writers, and creators across pop-culture disciplines. Organizers expect over 10,000 fans to attend this year’s show in Traverse City, Michigan. Malerman’s Saturday-only slot includes a booth for book signings, open Q&A sessions, and panel discussions that offer both die-hard horror fans and casual readers insight into his evolving career. Attendees can RSVP through the convention website to secure a VIP wristband, which grants front-of-line access and exclusive art prints.
From Bird Box To Graphic Novels
Malerman first made waves in 2014 with Bird Box, a post-apocalyptic thriller that Netflix adapted into a blockbuster starring Sandra Bullock. His next novel, Incidents Around The House, continues to explore psychological horror and is set for a feature film adaptation; shooting begins in May in Dublin, Ireland, with Jessica Chastain attached to star. In a recent Instagram post, he teased that this project delves into “mind-bending stuff” and thanked artist Neuron Paint for early concept art.
Beyond prose, Malerman co-founded the Michigan rock band The High Strung, contributing vocals and songwriting since 2002. The band’s track “The Luck You Got” became the theme for Showtime’s Shameless, underlining his cross-media appeal. Fans at TCC42025 will have the opportunity to discuss how his musical background informs his narrative style—another panel highlight.
A New Chapter: Rsvp: E.s.p.
On April 1, Malerman will launch RSVP: E.S.P. on Kickstarter, marking his debut in the graphic novel medium. The project pairs his narrative vision with the vivid artistry of Neuron Paint to investigate extrasensory perception through a horror lens. “I could not be more excited than I am,” he wrote in the event caption. The Kickstarter campaign offers tiered rewards, including print editions, digital copies, and behind-the-scenes sketches, many of which will be previewed exclusively at his TCC booth.
Behind The Scenes Of Adaptations
In addition to his own writing projects, Malerman’s interest in film criticism led to Watching Evil Dead, a nonfiction exploration of Sam Raimi’s cult classic experience—available on NetGalley for reviewers. Meanwhile, his forthcoming film adaptation of Incidents Around The House promises to be a marquee production. On Instagram, he revealed casting updates and location scouting images, emphasizing the collaborative spirit of adapting a novel to the screen.
Personal Passions And Creative Roots
Residing in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Malerman shares his home with fiancée and artist/musician Allison Laakko along with dozens of rescued animals—from cats and dogs to more eclectic pets like turtles and hedgehogs. The couple often collaborates on visual projects, and Laakko’s work has featured prominently in his book tour imagery. Their partnership reflects a blend of literary and visual arts, a theme fans can explore during the convention.
Meet And Greet Plans
Saturday’s schedule opens at 10 a.m. with an author Q&A, followed by signing sessions at noon and 3 p.m. A final panel at 5 p.m. will focus on navigating multiple creative outlets, from novels and music to graphic storytelling. Pre-registered VIP badge holders receive priority seating, custom enamel pins, and a limited-edition bookmark illustrated by Neuron Paint. Copies of Bird Box, Incidents Around The House, and exclusive Kickstarter art books will be available for purchase.
