Josh Malerman Opens Up ‘watching Evil Dead’
Josh Malerman, bestselling author of Bird Box, has revealed his first nonfiction work, Watching Evil Dead. The book is now available for request on NetGalley, offering early readers a chance to dive into a unique behind-the-scenes experience.
Inside The Book
Rather than a standard film analysis, Watching Evil Dead unfolds like a candid snapshot of one extraordinary night. In a recent Instagram post, Malerman explained, “The book is nonfiction, but rather than a film analysis, it’s more like a snapshot of what it feels like to show someone a horror movie they haven’t seen, or to see one for the first time yourself.” Over the course of that one profound evening, Malerman and visual artist Neuron Paint (@neuron_paint) grappled with mammoth themes: new love, dying love, and the thrill of standing at the dawn of a creative career.
Malerman adds that the story runs parallel to Sam Raimi’s own journey, noting, “By way of the movie, Sam Raimi and co. were just standing at the head of a career in horror.” Readers are invited to imagine themselves on the couch alongside Malerman, Neuron Paint, and their two friends, sharing in every jump scare, whispered confession, and burst of laughter.
About Josh Malerman
Born June 18, 1975, in Detroit, Malerman first gained renown with his 2014 horror novel Bird Box, which was adapted by Netflix into a major motion picture starring Sandra Bullock. A musician as well as a writer, he fronts the rock band The High Strung and has published titles including Unbury Carol, Goblin, and Inspection. His work often blends psychological tension with vivid sensory details—an approach that makes Watching Evil Dead a natural next step for the author.
Creative Collab With Neuron Paint
Malerman has previously teased his creative partnership with Neuron Paint on Instagram. In a post captioned “With @neuron_paint,” he shared a candid image of the two brainstorming ideas late at night. Earlier this May, Malerman also posted a series of moody black-and-white portraits by photographer Sabrina Delila Arts, offering a glimpse of the aesthetic that inspired his forthcoming book.
