Tony and Emmy winner Idina Menzel recently took to Instagram with an emotional message of gratitude after her longtime friend and former Wicked co-star Kristin Chenoweth attended “Redwood,” Menzel’s current Broadway production at the Nederlander Theatre. “Thanks for coming to @redwoodmusical! Love you!! #RedwoodMusical.” The image shows a signed Polaroid photo of Menzel and Chenoweth, possibly taken after the show

The social media appreciation followed a special moment on April 3, 2025, when Chenoweth made an unexpected appearance during a “Redwood” performance. The two Broadway luminaries, who originally starred together in “Wicked” (2003), delighted the audience by performing their beloved duet “For Good” as a surprise encore. This touching reunion raised $16,000 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

In her Instagram post, Menzel expressed deep appreciation for Chenoweth’s support and friendship, emphasizing how meaningful the reunion was within the context of “Redwood’s” emotional themes. “Redwood,” which premiered on February 13, 2025, represents Menzel’s Broadway comeback after a significant hiatus. The musical was co-conceived by Menzel and director Tina Landau, featuring music by Kate Diaz and lyrics collaboratively written by Diaz and Landau.

The production tells Jesse’s story—a successful businesswoman and mother seeking healing in Northern California’s magnificent forests following her son’s accidental overdose. Critics have highlighted Menzel’s emotionally powerful performance and vocal excellence, alongside the production’s immersive scenery, though some reviews mentioned concerns about pacing and lyrics.

“Redwood” continues performances through August 17, 2025. Fans can look forward to the cast recording’s digital release on May 13, 2025, with physical formats becoming available in subsequent months.
