Tonight marks a new treat for families and fans of the Muppets as veteran cartoonist Guy Gilchrist rolls out a surprise pop-up livestream event. The first session launches at 6 p.m. CST on Facebook’s official “Guy Gilchrist” page, followed by a second show at 7:30 p.m. CST on Instagram (@guyfgilchrist). For this week only, Gilchrist will sketch alongside viewers, belt out classic songs, and unveil rare archival treasures and special deals.
Pop-up Schedule And What To Expect
Gilchrist’s announcement on Instagram spelled out the evening’s lineup: “we are going to draw together, I’m going to sing some songs, we are going to have some exclusive deals and some archival and rare things to show you… And it’s going to be a lot of fun!” He adds that characters Sydney, Rowlf and Kermit will make virtual cameos, and that he’ll play his 53 Harmony Guitar live on camera. Fans tuning in at 6 p.m. CST on Facebook will get a front-row seat to the first set, with a follow-up session at 7:30 p.m. CST on Instagram. Gilchrist stresses these pop-up shows are the only livestreams he’ll host this week.
A Creative Career With The Muppets
Gilchrist is no stranger to Muppet magic. According to his biography, he began collaborating with Jim Henson in the 1980s, serving as the official cartoonist for The Muppet Show comic strip from 1981 to 1994. He’s authored and illustrated more than 100 children’s books, including many featuring the Muppets, Fraggle Rock, Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. Today based in Nashville, he’s built a loyal following by sharing quick sketches of beloved characters, original artwork and behind-the-scenes stories from his decades-long career.
Sketches, Songs And Special Guests
Gilchrist’s livestreams blend illustration and performance. He’ll guide viewers step by step through drawing exercises—fans are invited to gather paper and pencils ahead of time—then switch gears for live vocals on Muppet favorites. Past livestream highlights have included meet-and-greets with fellow Henson collaborators and surprise guest appearances by puppeteers. Though this week’s two shows are pop-up only, Gilchrist hints that future dates may follow if the response is strong.
From Thog Commissions To Heartfelt Tributes
Beyond his weekly livestreams, Gilchrist stays active on Instagram with commissioned work and personal remembrances. In a recent post, he shared a quick sketch of Thog, the cult-favorite Muppet monster, celebrating a new fan commission: “THOG 💙 always a blast to draw and #cultfavorite! Recently did this #commission and enjoyed the heck out of it 🖋️.” That energy carries into tonight’s interactive format. He’s also known to post heartfelt tributes to collaborators—one throwback from Instagram reads: “1982: NYC. You changed my world before we even met… I’ll never stop being YOUR CARTOONIST. Love, Guy 💚🌈,” a nod to his mentor Jim Henson.
Whether you’re picking up a pencil for the first time or you’ve got a sketchbook full of Muppet art, tonight’s pop-up livestream offers a chance to connect with one of the characters’ closest creative partners. Tune in on Facebook or Instagram, and be ready to draw, sing and celebrate the legacy of Jim Henson’s colorful world.
