The Broadway production of “Floyd Collins” has officially opened, bringing the haunting true story of Kentucky cave explorer Floyd Collins to life with a star-studded opening night celebration. Tony-nominated actor Jeremy Jordan and singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine lead the cast in this revival of the acclaimed musical at Lincoln Center Theater.
The red carpet was rolled out as the cast, creative team, and celebrity guests gathered to celebrate the official Broadway opening. Captured by photographer Sergio Villarini for Broadway.com, the event shows the excitement surrounding this highly anticipated production.
Images from the opening night reveal Jeremy Jordan, who plays the title role of Floyd Collins, looking dapper on the red carpet alongside his co-star Lizzy McAlpine, who makes her Broadway debut in the production. The pair has been building buzz for the show during its preview period, with Jordan recently sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of the production on social media.
The production began previews earlier this month at Lincoln Center Theater, with Jordan posting on Instagram: “We’re officially in previews at @lctheater! Honored to be working alongside (and in complete awe of) this cast, crew and our creative team, and can’t wait to keep sharing this incredible show with the world.”
The Story Behind Floyd Collins
The musical tells the tragic true story of Floyd Collins, a cave explorer who in 1925 became trapped in a narrow crawlway 55 feet below ground in Cave City, Kentucky. His plight became one of America’s first media sensations, with the rescue attempt drawing nationwide attention.
With music and lyrics by Adam Guettel and a book by Tina Landau, the show first premiered Off-Broadway in 1996 at Playwrights Horizons. This new production marks the show’s long-awaited Broadway debut. Jordan, known for his powerful vocals, recently discussed Guettel’s score in promotional interviews, describing it as “country-esque” with complex, beautiful harmonies that challenge performers while captivating audiences.
Jeremy Jordan’s Broadway Return
For Jordan, the role marks a significant return to Broadway. The actor, who earned a Tony nomination for his role in “Newsies,” has built an impressive career spanning stage and screen. He has starred in numerous Broadway productions including “Rock of Ages,” “West Side Story,” “Bonnie & Clyde,” and “American Son.” His television work includes roles in “Supergirl” and “Smash.”
Jordan has been actively promoting the show on his social media, recently sharing photos from a Broadway.com photoshoot with his “pretend siblings” in the cast, writing: “Couldn’t ask for a better pair of pretend siblings. Love these two and this company.”
Lizzy McAlpine’s Broadway Debut
The production also marks the Broadway debut of singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine, adding star power to the cast. McAlpine, known for her music career and songs like “Ceilings” and “All My Ghosts,” brings her musical talents to the stage in this production.
First look production photos by Joan Marcus were recently released, giving fans a glimpse of the cave setting and the performers in action. The images showcase the show’s atmospheric set design that transports audiences to the Kentucky caves where the real-life drama unfolded.
Audience Reaction And Ticket Information
As the show transitions from previews to its official run, audience reaction has been enthusiastic. In a recent Instagram video from the theater, Jordan announced to waiting fans that the show was officially extending its Broadway engagement, news that was met with cheers.
In response to high demand, the production team has been working to make more performances accessible, with a post on the show’s Instagram stating: “We are doing our best behind the scenes to get the small number of 18+ shows shifted to All Ages (we can’t promise anything, but we’re trying!).”
Tickets for “Floyd Collins” are now available to the general public through the Lincoln Center Theater website, with the digital lottery offering a limited number of $49 tickets for each performance.
