Braving the heat on East 4th Street, the Off-Broadway hit is completely sold out—though hopeful theatergoers can still queue up on the cancellation line. The production bows out on June 29.
See Nat King Cole And Sammy Davis Jr. Come Alive
Dulé Hill and Dennis Watkins step into the iconic shoes of Nat “King” Cole and Sammy Davis Jr. in King of Bingo and Patricia McGregor’s musical drama LIGHTS OUT: NAT “KING” COLE. With music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by John McDaniel, the show transports audiences to a bygone era of jazz and showmanship.
From West Wing To Center Stage
Hill, born May 3, 1975, in Easton, Maryland, first captivated TV audiences as Charlie Young on The West Wing and later as Gus on USA’s Psych. A trained tap dancer and Tony nominee for Once on This Island, he brings his signature rhythm and charm to the role of Cole, channeling the singer’s smooth baritone and effortless cool.
A Crew Of Legends And Luminaries
The creative team includes veteran writers King of Bingo and director Patricia McGregor; Broadway stalwart John McDaniel rounds out the ensemble as music supervisor and arranger. In an Instagram post on June 14, Hill shared behind-the-scenes snapshots, writing, “2 More Weeks Left!! Sharing this story of Mr Cole in @lightsoutplay @NYTW79 has been a moment in time that I will cherish for a lifetime…truly grateful.”
Celebrity Sightings In The Audience
Recent performances drew an all-star crowd: Phylicia Rashad, George Faison, Nicole Ari Parker and Ben Vereen were spotted applauding from the stalls. The show’s Instagram handle @lightsoutplay celebrated, “We had some icons in the audience this past week! A special thanks to Phylicia Rashad, George Faison, Nicole Ari Parker, and Ben Vereen for joining us.”
As summer heats up, East 4th Street offers one last chance to catch this dynamic pairing live. Keep an eye on the cancellation line for tickets to a night of music, dance and nostalgic brilliance before June 29.
