Rap legend Dr. Dre has made a landmark investment in his hometown, donating $10 million to help fund a new, state-of-the-art performing arts center at Compton High School. The facility now bears his name as part of a sprawling $200 million campus transformation.
A $200 Million Transformation
The upgraded campus features modern classrooms, a cutting-edge auditorium, rehearsal studios, and art workshops designed to nurture student creativity. School and community leaders gathered on opening day to cut the ribbon on the Dr. Dre Performing Arts Center, a showcase of sleek lines, dynamic lighting rigs, and acoustically treated walls.
A large bronze plaque greets visitors at the main entrance, and inside, rows of tiered seating face a pro-grade stage ready for music, drama, and dance productions. The overhaul aligns with district efforts to modernize facilities across Los Angeles Unified School District, making Compton High one of the most advanced campuses in the region.
Dre’s Philanthropy Roots
Andre “Dr. Dre” Young, who grew up blocks from the campus, spoke at the ceremony, reflecting on his journey from Compton to global fame. “Dream big, I did,” he said, pausing as students cheered. Dre’s contribution matches his belief in lifting up underserved communities through education and the arts.
This donation builds on his past support for Compton schools, including STEM labs and scholarship programs. In 2013, Dre and business partner Jimmy Iovine launched a scholarship fund to send local graduates to USC’s music and film programs. Today’s gift cements his status as one of the city’s most engaged philanthropists.
A Celebration With Students And Leaders
In a video captured by KTLA5, District Superintendent Megan Reilly praised the project, calling it a “game-changer for generations of artists and performers.” Compton High Principal Hector Sanchez noted that the center will host community events, youth workshops, and even touring productions previously out of reach for local students.
Students from choir and drama classes performed a medley of school songs and original rap verses, welcoming Dre onto the stage. Class president Jasmine Perez told guests, “This is more than a building—it’s proof that our dreams matter.”
