Daniel Franzese, known for his roles in Mean Girls and Looking, has officially been two years sober. In an Instagram post on June 3, the actor and comedian reflected on the milestone, crediting a sudden health scare for forcing him to rethink his relationship with alcohol and sugar.
Sobriety Journey
“Two years sober from alcohol today ✌🏽 Not because I had a wild problem, unless you count ordering bottomless brunch as a personality trait,” Franzese wrote. The 45-year-old shared that a frightening medical episode prompted him to step away from drinking. He thanked trainers and friends on social media—@iamrustyjohn, @jessejamespattison and @jpb_nohogym—for their support and inspiration along the way.
Health Transformation
Since giving up booze, Franzese has overhauled his diet, cutting nearly all sugar. The actor reports he’s reversed prediabetes and shed more than 120 pounds. “It turns out that feeling good is addictive too,” he noted, adding that the goal was never perfection but presence—to be there for himself and those he loves.
Daniel Franzese has long used his platform to champion LGBTQ visibility. Beyond sobriety, he regularly posts uplifting messages about self-acceptance and mental health. In a previous Instagram share, he highlighted young fans who found confidence in seeing someone like him on screen.
Looking Ahead
Franzese, who also competes on RuPaul’s Drag Race Celebrity, says he intends to keep prioritizing wellness. He closed his sobriety announcement with a toast: “Here’s to health, humor, and making the kind of choices your future self celebrates you for (with sparkling water, of course).”
With two years behind him and a supportive network at his side, Franzese’s story underscores that a health scare can become the spark for lasting, positive change. His journey offers hope for anyone ready to swap old habits for a brighter, sober tomorrow.
