Chrissie Fit Demands Justice for Missing Asylum Seeker in LA

Star-activist urges help to find disappeared gay asylum seeker and demands his safe return

By Reshmi Das

Chrissie Fit, the Cuban-American actress best known for her roles in Pitch Perfect 2 and Step Up: All In, took her career into the streets this weekend. In downtown Los Angeles, she led a peaceful but impassioned demonstration calling for answers about Andry Jose Hernandez Romero, a gay asylum seeker who was allegedly taken by ICE and transported to the Centro de Control de Extranjeros (CECOT) in El Salvador without due process.

Background On Chrissie Fit’s Activism

Born in Miami to Cuban parents, Chrissie Fit began her breakout TV work on Disney Channel’s Jump In! before landing film parts in The Starving Games and various television series. Over the years, she’s quietly built a reputation for speaking out on causes she cares about—especially LGBTQ rights and immigrant justice. On June 1, during Pride Month, she posted heartfelt support for the community:

La Protest For Andry José Hernández Romero

Around 200 supporters gathered near City Hall, waving signs that read “No Kings,” “#FREEANDRY,” and “Justice for Andry.” Fit stood at the front, microphone in hand, wearing a red top and blue sash that mirrored the U.S. flag emojis she included in her caption:

“I’m asking f@#$%&! nicely! 🇺🇸😡💙

When your community has been attacked for months, most brutally this week, being IN community, seeing all the support, yelling loud and proud with friends and allies, means so much 🙏🏽

And if you couldn’t make it out today and want to find another way to help… Andry Jose Hernandez Romero, a gay asylum seeker, was forcefully disappeared by f@#$%&! ice to CECOT in El Salvador. No due process. Please donate and/or sign the petition to bring him home. Link in my bio.

Her message underscored two urgent claims: that Andry Hernandez Romero was removed without access to legal counsel, and that his whereabouts—and safety—remain unknown.

Continuing The Call To Action

Fit asked fellow Californians and fans worldwide to donate to legal funds and sign a petition hosted by immigrant-rights organizations. As of this writing, the petition has gathered thousands of signatures, but campaign leaders say more community pressure is vital to compel ICE to reveal Andry’s location and grant him due process.

Local advocates from the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Southern California joined the demonstration, sharing speeches and data on asylum delays and family separations. Attendees held informational flyers explaining how CECOT—notorious for overcrowding and limited oversight—is used to detain migrants who haven’t been convicted of any crime.

A History Of Lgbtq And Immigrant Advocacy

Chrissie Fit’s intersectional activism dates back years. In addition to public support for Pride, she’s volunteered with organizations like GLSEN and UnidosUS. Her celebrity platform helps amplify stories that are too often ignored:

“Visibility isn’t just about celebration,” she said in a 2022 interview with Latina magazine. “It’s also about accountability.”

By blending her entertainment career with grassroots work, Fit hopes to transform empathy into action—and to shine a spotlight on cases like Andry’s, where courage has met obstacles at every turn.

The rally closed with a moment of silence and a rendition of “Amazing Grace,” leaving participants energized to text, call and email elected officials this week. Organizers reminded the crowd that even small acts—sharing the petition link, tagging legislators on social media, donating to legal aid—can tip the scales toward accountability.

Chrissie Fit’s call was simple but urgent: bring Andry home, and ensure no other asylum seeker vanishes without explanation.
