The Threat To Our Public Lands
Legendary singer-songwriter Carole King took to Instagram on June 11 to amplify a Wilderness Watch repost calling on Americans to dial 202-224-3121 and urge senators to vote NO on any budget bill that undermines public-lands protections. The push comes after Senate Republicans introduced language mandating the sale of 3.29 million acres of public land across western states (excluding Montana), plus approval of the Ambler Mining Road through Alaska’s Gates of the Arctic National Preserve.
Key Provisions In The Budget Bill
The proposed budget text targets some of the most pristine ecosystems left in the U.S. It would:
• Force oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Western Arctic.
• Approve a 211-mile right-of-way for the Ambler Mining Road, opening one of Alaska’s wildest regions to industrial traffic.
• Mandate the sale of millions of acres of national forest, Bureau of Land Management and other public holdings.
According to the reposted caption, “Senate Republicans also added a provision that would approve a key right-of-way for construction of the Ambler Mining Road… The road would facilitate huge mining operations that would benefit a private Canadian company and would create road access into one of the wildest regions in Alaska.”
How Fans Can Take Action
King’s call to action includes a script for constituents:
“As your constituent, I’m calling to urge Senator [Last Name] to vote NO on any budget bill that contains provisions threatening Wilderness and public lands. Specifically, I urge Senator [Last Name] to oppose provisions that would force oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Western Arctic, would sell off any federal public lands, would mine next to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and would construct the Ambler Mining Road through the Gates of the Arctic National Preserve. Thank you.”
Her post reminds followers that the budget process is fluid over the coming days, and amendments could add or remove these controversial measures—but the urgent step is to contact senators now.
Carole’s Love For Wild Spaces
King’s own feed has long reflected her nature affinity. In a throwback shot from a canyon session by @guywebsterphotography, she captioned simply, “Carole in the canyon.” (instagram.com/p/DKe94iwOdLJ/) This personal glimpse into her connection with wild landscapes underlines why protecting public lands has become a cause she’s willing to champion.
As the Senate deliberates, King’s message is clear: this is a pivotal moment for America’s natural heritage, and fans have the power to influence the outcome.
