Paralympic medalist and motivational speaker Amy Purdy has shared an emotional update about her husband’s recovery from spinal surgery, celebrating a significant improvement in his quality of life after years of suffering.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Purdy revealed that her husband, Daniel Gale, underwent a two-level fusion to his lower back approximately ten weeks ago to address collapsed discs that had caused him years of chronic, debilitating pain.

A Journey Through Chronic Pain

“My husband had a 2 level fusion to his lower back 10 weeks ago. He was living in pain for years with collapsed discs and chronic pain. It was so hard to see him that way, it sucked the life out of him and his quality of life quickly started deteriorating,” Purdy wrote in her Instagram caption.

The couple had initially hesitated to pursue surgery, wanting to ensure they were making the right decision. However, as Daniel’s condition worsened, they finally sought medical intervention when the pain became unbearable.

Purdy expressed immense gratitude toward Dr. Galizzi at Minimally Invasive Spine, whom she tagged in her post, for the successful procedure and care provided to her husband. The image accompanying the post shows Purdy and her husband together, looking happy and relaxed – a stark contrast to the difficult period they had endured.

Remarkable Recovery

Though Daniel is still in recovery mode – he must wait three months post-surgery before beginning physical therapy to allow proper fusion of his back – Purdy reports that his mobility has dramatically improved. She shared that he was even able to travel to California to join her for work obligations.

“He’s still taking it day by day but he’s moving around amazing and he even traveled to California this week to be with me for work. I honestly feel I have my husband back. Not just from surgery but from years of pain,” Purdy wrote.

The Paralympic snowboarder concluded her post with a reflection on resilience and partnership: “We all go through challenging times, it’s much easier doing it together. Grateful he’s had my back and I’ve have had his.”

Amy Purdy’s Own Health Journey

This celebration of her husband’s improved health comes from someone who knows medical challenges intimately. Amy Purdy is a Paralympic bronze and silver medalist in snowboarding who lost both her legs below the knees at age 19 due to bacterial meningitis. She also received a kidney transplant from her father.

In recent Instagram posts, Purdy has been open about her own health journey. Just last month, she shared: “After losing my legs below the knees at 19, I went on to become a professional snowboarder and then got knocked off my feet again 6 years ago after a life altering injury and had to start all over again.”

Advocate For Resilience

Beyond her athletic achievements, Purdy has built a career as a motivational speaker, sharing her story of overcoming challenges. In early April, she announced an upcoming book on resilience, writing: “I have a new book coming out about resilience and ‘How’ I survived and thrived through my greatest challenges.”

Her experiences have made her an advocate for embracing life’s obstacles as opportunities. In another recent post, she advised: “No matter what you go through, it will all be ok… Life is such an adventure, as long as you keep putting one foot in front of the other you will be ok. I promise.”

This perspective likely helped both Amy and Daniel navigate his health struggles, culminating in this positive surgical outcome and recovery that she’s now celebrating.

The couple’s journey through health challenges highlights the importance of perseverance, proper medical care, and having supportive partnerships during difficult times – themes that resonate throughout Purdy’s advocacy work and personal story.
