British actress Kate Beckinsale shared a poignant Easter message dedicated to her late stepfather, Roy Battersby, on what would have been his birthday. The emotional Instagram post combines grief with the actress’s characteristic dark humor as she marks the coinciding of Easter Sunday with his birth date.
She has shared a carousel of images with her post showing Roy Battersby smiling at the camera and a few images of the family in their younger days. These images capture the warm relationship she shared with her stepfather.
“Happy birthday Roy,” Beckinsale wrote in her caption. “Given I’ve been waiting all day-can you rise again please -ideally tomorrow …that would be great. You being dead is really fucking wearing now.”
The actress continued with raw emotion: “I love you so very much and I wish you had been here to have your birthday and Easter on the same day but anyway -see you tomorrow. I shall be waiting at the mouth of the cave.”
The reference to “waiting at the mouth of the cave” appears to be a nod to the biblical Easter story of Jesus’s resurrection, creating a poignant parallel between the religious holiday and her personal loss.
This isn’t the first time Beckinsale has publicly expressed her grief over losing someone. Just weeks ago, on March 19, she shared another emotional tribute marking the anniversary of her father Richard Beckinsale’s death. In that post, she wrote: “It’s still unthinkable, impossible. Thank you so much @channel5_tv for your lovely documentary ‘Porridge: 50 years of laughter’… Daddy, you are so dreadfully, horribly, lovingly missed and we’re so, so proud of you. Some years hit harder than others.”
Richard Beckinsale, a beloved British television actor known for roles in popular sitcoms “Porridge” and “Rising Damp,” died suddenly from a heart attack in 1979 at the age of 31. Kate was only five years old at the time of his passing, making her loss particularly profound.
Finding Comfort With Family
Despite the evident pain in her Easter message, Beckinsale has been finding comfort in family connections. Just days before her Easter post, she shared images with her mother, Judy Loe, writing: “Roomies, homies, Big and little Edie ❤️ I love you my Mama.”
In another recent post celebrating UK Mother’s Day, Beckinsale penned a lengthy tribute to her mother: “Any journey you are on, I am on it with you, as you have always been with me…. You’ve been mum, dad, second parent to Lily, prohibitor of my being allowed to get bubblegum out of a machine (because it’s common, apparently), partner in crime, teacher of how to lose one’s mind if someone rustles their sweets too loudly in the cinema, best friend, keeper of precious things, including my heart.”
She added poignantly, “We may have lost our two boys but we’ve still got each other and I’m hanging on tight,” referring to both her father and her stepfather, director Roy Battersby.
Beckinsale, known for balancing emotional vulnerability with humor on social media, has been open about navigating grief while maintaining her characteristic wit. She also recently celebrated wrapping a film project, thanking “those extra special angels who held me up during a tough time for me to be shooting long days away from my mama.”
As she navigates this difficult period following the recent loss of her stepfather and the ongoing absence of her father, Beckinsale’s candid social media presence continues to resonate with fans who appreciate her willingness to share both grief and joy with equal authenticity.
