A recent Instagram post has given fans a rare glimpse into the making of 2016’s blockbuster hit ‘Deadpool,’ specifically highlighting former MMA fighter Gina Carano’s transformation into the powerful villain Angel Dust. The behind-the-scenes footage showcases the extensive preparation and physical demands required for the role.

In the post, producer Simon Kinberg praises Carano’s physical capabilities, stating, “We were very blessed with the fact Gina was capable, most actors wouldn’t be.” The video clip comes from The Making Of Deadpool documentary, revealing the effort behind bringing the character to life.

From Fighter To Villain

Gina Carano’s background as a professional mixed martial artist proved invaluable for the role of Angel Dust. The character, who serves as an enforcer for antagonist Ajax (played by Ed Skrein), required strength and combat skills—attributes Carano brought from her fighting career.

Before acting, Carano competed professionally from 2006 to 2009, earning a record of 7-1 and becoming known as the “face of women’s MMA.” Her background made her uniquely qualified to perform the action sequences required for Angel Dust.

The Physical Transformation

The footage shows Carano working with the stunt team to choreograph fight sequences. Her character possessed superhuman strength, requiring her to portray power while maintaining precision for safe stunts.

The transformation also included the character’s distinct look. The footage reveals the makeup and costume process that helped Carano embody Angel Dust’s intimidating presence.

A Career-defining Role

Carano’s portrayal of Angel Dust represented one of her most significant film roles. She made her acting debut in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire (2011), which launched her acting career. In April 2012, Carano received the Chuck Norris Award for Best Female Action Star at ActionFest, recognizing her performance in Haywire.

Carano’s Current Endeavors

Since Deadpool, Carano has continued to pursue various interests. In April 2024, she introduced her new horse CzR, connecting the name to a horse she barrel raced in her teens.

She’s also been focusing on fitness. In March 2024, she posted an “inspiration board” featuring twenty women who motivate her fitness goals. In a birthday post, Carano reflected on aging, stating, “I don’t know what all the hubbub about getting older is.. I freakin love it,” thanking followers for their support.

Though Angel Dust didn’t return for the sequel, Carano’s performance remained memorable. The behind-the-scenes footage offers a look at how her fighting skills brought authenticity to the action.
